Even the Best MTG Players Make Dumb Mistakes

September 24, 2008

From the Japanese Nationals, widely considered to be one of the toughest Magic The Gathering national tournaments:

Wanting to keep the pressure on Takahashi, Masashi was forced to use a Pact of Negation on a Cryptic Command from his opponent targeting an un-suspending Riftwing Cloudskate. Conspicuously he failed to put a marker on the top of his deck to remind him to pay the requisite 3UU during his following upkeep.

Yuuta’s turn went long after a series of plays and, sure enough, by the time Masashi got the turn back he had completely forgotten about his Pact. With an audible gasp Oiso drew for the turn as the audience could only watch in horror. Immediately realizing what he had done Oiso shuffled up his cards and conceded to Takahashi.

Masashi Oiso is one of the best players to ever play Magic The Gathering. He is eligible to be voted in the Pro Tour Hall of Fame in the class of 2012.

Amazingly, even with his bonehead play, he still won the whole tournament!

MTG Black/White Token Deck For New The Standard Format

September 24, 2008

With Black/Red Tokens losing Greater Gargadon and Mogg War Marshal, you might want to trade the red cards for white cards if you want to play a token deck. White has Cloudgoat Ranger, Spectral Procession, and one of the best lands to use with creature tokens, Windbrisk Heights. You can still splash red for Torrent of Souls.

Here is a deck that placed 8th in a block PTQ. It might be a good deck in Standard when Shards of Alara is released.

Dramatic Entrance, Woodfall Primus, and Mercy Killing?!

September 22, 2008

I love me a good rogue Magic The Gathering deck. I always try to play an under the radar deck in the tournaments I play. There’s nothing like surprising your opponent with unexpected cards.

So, in preparation for the upcoming Standard rotation, I’ve been checking out the PTQ block lists for unique decks. The new Standard format will probably closely mirror the current block format.

Here is a crazy list that got 2nd place using the trio of Dramatic Entrance, Woodfall Primus, and Mercy Killing.

Should Reflecting Pool Be Banned in Post-Rotation Standard?

September 19, 2008

There’s an interesting discussion on StarCityGames.com’s forums. David Sutcliffe wrote a long piece with 7 reasons why Reflecting Pool should be banned once Shards of Alara is released.

I don’t think Pool should be banned. I think there will still be a good number of post-rotation Standard decks that don’t need the Pool. For example, you’ve got:

  • mono white Kithkin
  • blue/black Faeries
  • mono red Demigod of Revenge
  • black/red tokens with Torrent of Souls
  • black/green Elves

MTG Mono White Kithkin Deck For The New Standard Format

September 19, 2008

I just came across this mono white kithkin build that won the 2008 Argentina Nationals. This Kithkin list should be a pretty good in the new Standard format, starting October 3, 2008 when Shards of Alara is released.

Reasons to Play Magus of the Moon in Previous Level Blue

September 17, 2008

This is Luis Scott-Vargas’ second video about building Previous Level Blue for the new Extended format. The first video was about the Magic The Gathering cards that make up this deck.

In this video, he gives a couple reasons to play Magus of the Moon. This red creature has been wrecking the Type II (Standard) format in the last couple of weeks. It can definitely hurt Extended decks too, because many Extended decks have a lot of non-basic lands.
