Locations and Dates for the 2009 Magic The Gathering Regionals
March 19, 2009 | Posted by Dee
I just found out about the locations and dates for this year’s MTG Regionals.
I’ve only been to one Regionals, which was last year. Here was my tournament report.
It was a fun tournament. I met a lot of cool people.
I don’t know why but Regionals seemed less serious than a PTQ (Pro Tour Qualifier). It’s still a competitive setting but you’ll find a lot of casual players that don’t go to PTQs. So, it’s bigger than a PTQ and you’ll meet a bunch of MTG players from your nearby towns and cities.
I like to think of it as a really big FNM (Friday Night Magic) tournament. However, the judges will enforce the rules more strictly, so keep that in mind.
If you’re looking to get some tournament experience under your belt, check out your nearest Regionals location.
By the way, I’ll be going to the Houston, Texas location. If you’re playing at that location, it would cool to meet you.
(Thanks to Bill Stark for the scoop.)

Regionals, like States and like GPs, feels more like a community event than a PTQ does. I think it comes down to the labeling as much as anything.
What will I find when I come to a prerelease? New cards.
What will I find when I come to Regionals? People from my region.
What will I find when I come to a PTQ? Competitive people.
Now, I advocate PTQs as a fun time, but for that section of the Magic populace that thinks of themselves as not being especially competitive, I think the intrinsic ‘branding’ of each event must have a significant influence on their desire to go.
(PTQs are my favorite events, although States is kind of fun from a pure-chaos POV, as California States is enormous.)
Excellent commentary. I definitely agree.
