Tezzeret the Seeker Control Deck for MTG Type 2/Standard
February 27, 2009
It’s interesting to see the Magic The Gathering planeswalker, Tezzeret the Seeker, have an impact in Vintage and Extended yet not really find a home in Standard. However, Zac Hill (who played in a recent Pro Tour) might have brewed up a contender with this blue Shards of Alara mythic rare. He says the following build is pretty good.
A Couple Games With the Swans Type 2 Decklist
February 25, 2009
I played a couple games with the Swans deck I wrote about yesterday. I played against these two decklists: Bant aggro control and Esper Reveillark.
Here is the Swans list again for reference sake.
Boat Brew MTG With Conflux (Red/White Reveillark Type 2 Deck)
February 25, 2009
If you’ve been following Magic The Gathering standard recently, you’ve probably heard of this decklist. Here is a list with Conflux cards that recently won a 60 person type two tournament in Japan. It was piloted by top MTG pro player, Tomoharu Saito.
Oblivion Ring Vs. Agony Warp in Conflux Draft
February 25, 2009
I still can’t get over a top Magic The Gathering pro taking Agony Warp over Oblivion Ring. However, as I thought about it, I came up with a reason why he did that.
Maybe he thought that there would be a lot of aggro decks in his draft pod. Aggro is pretty strong in Alara/Alara/Conflux draft. Agony Warp might be better against aggro since it can function as Lightning Helix and save you some life points.
While this reason is valid, I’m still rating Oblivion Ring higher. It might be worth testing though and seeing if these cards are closer than conventional wisdom would suggest.
Powerful Swans of Bryn Argoll Deck for MTG Standard/Type 2
February 24, 2009
If you’ve been reading my blog for some time or you read my about page, you probably know that I like rogue decklists. Here is a cool Swans deck that placed in the top four of a 60 person MTG standard tournament in Japan.
This interesting red/blue decklist hearkens back to the counter burn decklists of old. In the past, Magic The Gathering’s standard format occasionally had tier one red/blue control decklists. Time will tell if this new red/blue decklist is also tier one.
Want to Draft Conflux Well? Try a Two Color Aggro Decklist
February 24, 2009
Magic The Gathering’s newest block is comprised of the multicolor sets, Shards of Alara and Conflux. So, when drafting this block, most players play at least three colors. And with Conflux’s five color cards and domain mechanic, more and more people are trying out the five color control archetype.
But don’t count out the traditional two color builds. Here’s a two color decklist that went 3-0 in Grand Prix Rotterdam.
Why You Shouldn’t Force a Deck in Conflux Draft
February 23, 2009
I think it’s a very good idea not to force a certain deck in Alara/Alara/Conflux draft.
Check out to the following quotes from Ervin Tormos. He went 6-0 in the draft format of Magic The Gathering’s Worlds 2008 tournament. The format was triple Shards of Alara booster packs.
Drafting Conflux With MTG Pro, Shuuhei Nakamura
February 22, 2009
Wizards has some great coverage of Grand Prix Rotterdam. This limited tournament is going on right now this weekend and the players are into day two.
Day one was sealed with 3 Shards of Alara booster packs and 3 Conflux packs. Day two is Alara/Alara/Conflux booster draft.
In the opening draft, David Sutcliffe stood behind one of the top Magic The Gathering players today, Shuuhei Nakamura, and watched him make his picks.
The 2 Best Decks to Draft in Shards/Shards/Conflux
February 13, 2009
This is just a theory since I haven’t drafted Shards of Alara and Conflux a lot. Magic The Gathering’s newest set changes the format. MTG players will have to reconsider their strategy.
With Conflux’s arrival, I think there will be two top archetypes.
Misdirection and Deception in Magic The Gathering
February 12, 2009
Bill Stark has another great post on his blog. He gives two examples of using misdirection to gain an advantage in MTG.
