Conflux Draft Tournament Report (Alara/Conflux/Conflux Boosters)
March 27, 2009
Yesterday, I played in a Alara/Conflux/Conflux draft at my local comic book shop. We had two tables of six Magic The Gathering players. The tournament director paired us up regardless of table, so I had one game where I played against someone from the other table.
We played four rounds of swiss.
Red/White Kithkin Vs. Five Color Control (MTG Matchup Analysis)
March 22, 2009

I really want to qualify for Pro Tour (PT) Austin so I’m doing some playtesting in the Magic The Gathering Standard format. Austin is only an hour from my place so it would be awesome to get a Pro Tour invite. The Pro Tour Qualifiers (PTQs) for PT Austin start in about six weeks so now is a good time to figure out good decklists to play.
I played a couple games with two Standard decklists that got top eight in the last Pro Tour. The first list is Red/White Kithkin (aka Vengeant Weenie) and the second list is Five Color Cruel Control.
Why Red/White Kithkin Destroys Green/Black Elves
March 21, 2009
I just finished playing a league match on magic-league.com. I played Red/White Kithkin while my opponent ran Green/Black Elves. I won two quick games and it wasn’t very close.
This matchup seems to be in the Kithkin player’s favor by a wide margin. Here are a couple reasons why:
Notes About the Red/White Kithkin Vs. Swans Matchup
March 20, 2009
As the Red/White Kithkin player (decklist here), I thought I had the game in hand. I had two Wizened Cenns and Glorious Anthem. Also, I had just played Cloudgoat Ranger.
He had four mana. However, he untapped, played a land, and killed all my guys with Pyroclasm and Volcanic Fallout. I should not have played the Cloudgoat Ranger.
I won the second game with double Burrenton Forge-Tender. That card is so good against the Swans decklist. It stops their board sweepers as well as keeping them from drawing cards off of Swans of Bryn Argoll.
I sided in four Burrenton Forge-Tender and two Ranger of Eos. Here’s what I took out.
-3 Glorious Anthem
-1 Goldmeadow Stalwart
-1 Cloudgoat Ranger
-1 Ajani Vengeant
I’m not sure if those are the cards I should take out. What do you think?
Overview of the Type 2 Swans Decklist (Includes Sideboard Plans)

Chris Jobin has an in-depth look at the Swans of Bryn Argoll Standard decklist that a couple Japanese players ran at the last Pro Tour.
If you’re looking to play a “Draw-Go” control deck, check out his overview of this new decklist. He goes over the cards and also gives sideboarding plans.
Locations and Dates for the 2009 Magic The Gathering Regionals
March 19, 2009
I just found out about the locations and dates for this year’s MTG Regionals.
I’ve only been to one Regionals, which was last year. Here was my tournament report.
It was a fun tournament. I met a lot of cool people.
I don’t know why but Regionals seemed less serious than a PTQ (Pro Tour Qualifier). It’s still a competitive setting but you’ll find a lot of casual players that don’t go to PTQs. So, it’s bigger than a PTQ and you’ll meet a bunch of MTG players from your nearby towns and cities.
I like to think of it as a really big FNM (Friday Night Magic) tournament. However, the judges will enforce the rules more strictly, so keep that in mind.
If you’re looking to get some tournament experience under your belt, check out your nearest Regionals location.
By the way, I’ll be going to the Houston, Texas location. If you’re playing at that location, it would cool to meet you.
(Thanks to Bill Stark for the scoop.)
How to Mulligan in Alara/Alara/Conflux Draft
March 10, 2009

Steve Sadin has a great guide on how to mulligan in Shards of Alara/Conflux draft. I like his article a lot because it has practical examples. Also, he gives good reasons his mulligan decisions.
