Winning With Chapin’s UW Jace Control

February 25, 2010

I didn’t buy the hype with Jace, the Mind Sculptor when he was first spoiled. Don’t get me wrong, I knew he would be a Standard Constructed staple. He is powerful, but I didn’t think he would be insane.

Well, I was wrong. I’ve been playtesting Pat Chapin’s UW Jace Control deck from last weekend’s Pro Tour and Jace has been a monster. Chapin built the following decklist that makes Jace insane.

PT San Diego Deck Tech: Boss Naya Zoo (0 Baneslayers!)

February 20, 2010

In the following video, Tom Ross talks about Boss Naya Zoo, his new Standard deck that incorporates a couple Worldwake cards. He played it at Pro Tour San Diego along with Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa (PV) and Luis Scott-Vargas (LSV).

You know the deck has to be very good when LSV plays it at a Pro Tour instead of a Jace, the Mind Sculptor deck. LSV likes playing blue control and Jace is the best control card since Cryptic Command. It might even be better than the Lorwyn rare.

Boss Naya Zoo bears a passing resemblance to Naya Lightsaber. However, it has 0 Baneslayer Angels. Instead, it plays a Stoneforge Mystic package of Basilisk Collar and Behemoth Sledge.

Also, it runs Knight of the Reliquary instead of Woolly Thoctar. The Knight is much better since it can fetch the new Worldwake lands: Raging Ravine, Tectonic Edge, and Sejiri Steppe.

[Q & A] What Does Worldwake Bring to RG Valakut Combo?

February 19, 2010

This post is part of the Q & A section. Use the contact form if you want to submit a question.

Don asks:

I’m really enjoying Valakut Combo and I think I’ll make it my main Standard deck.

What are your thoughts on:

Comet Storm? In testing I think it is pretty sweet. It is a good finisher and good control card all in one.

Searing Blaze? This gives the deck a bit more early game control. With Harrow and Khalni, it’s not that hard to get a land out on their turn to get the landfall effect off.

Explore? I think this is better than Rampant Growth in this deck.

Raging Ravine? Seems like it may slow down the combo, but it will give you something to do with the mana sitting around.

I also saw this creature variant.

Dark Bant Summoning Trap (The Best Rogue Deck in Standard)

February 16, 2010

At a PTQ in December of last year, I met a player named Jherjames. He showed me his Summoning Trap deck for Standard that had done well for him.

At the State Championships, he went 6-1-1 for 10th place. He beat White Weenie once and Boros Bushwhacker twice. His record versus Jund was 3-1. His draw was an intentional draw in the last round.

After his success at States, he won two Gameday tournaments. His combined record was 10-1-2.

I played a few games against him with Red/Green Valakut Combo and he crushed me in five straight games.

Jherjames also had success playing the deck on Magic Online. And it’s had a couple top four results on Magic-League. I think it’s the best rogue deck in Standard.

I’m a little bit surprised more people aren’t playing it. The lack of popularity could be because of the high price tag. It has a bunch of expensive rares and mythic rares including Baneslayer Angel.

Ranger of Crabs Deck For Worldwake Standard

February 12, 2010

Hedron CrabBill Stark brings us an interesting decklist by Kyle Sanchez that he found on Kyle’s Twitter account. Kyle is one of the premium writers for Starcitygames. He’s known for his rogue decks, most of which are mediocre imo, but occasionally he has some good ones.

His latest list is a mill deck with Archive Trap, Hedron Crab, and Ranger of Eos to fetch the Crabs. He claims it’s the best deck in Worldwake Standard. Time and playtesting will tell if he’s right.

He had a version before Worldwake came out that seemed to be doing all right in local tournaments and MTGO. Maybe his addition of Worldwake cards makes the deck much better.

Also, while I may not like most of Kyle’s creations, he does playtest his decks. Anyways, here’s the decklist.

Lol, Bazaar Trader Deck Gets 1st Place Out of 73 Players

February 11, 2010

bazaar-trader.jpgI was browsing through Magic-League.com looking for deck ideas when I saw this deck. Bazaar Trader in a 1st place deck? You gotta be kidding me.

This has to be the most hilarious deck in Standard.

Worldwake Draft Report (From the Launch Party)

February 9, 2010

Cunning SparkmageLast week, I had the difficult decision of choosing a deck to play for FNM. It was between Jund or RG Valakut. I was undefeated with Jund in the previous FNM, but I went with RG Valakut. The combo deck is much more fun to play and I was excited to play with the 3 Chandra Nalaar that I won in the past FNM.

I made it to the tournament site right before they got started. I went over to the TO to pay and he said, “You in on the draft?” I thought, that’s cool having a draft along with the Standard tournament. I said, “No, but I’m here to play Standard.” He said, “There’s no Standard tonight. We only do draft for the Launch Party. So, you wanna draft?”

I had some experience with Zendikar Sealed, but I never drafted Zendikar or Worldwake before. I didn’t even have time to read the whole Worldwake spoiler. Still, I wanted to get my weekly MTG tournament fix so after 3.2 seconds, I said, “Sure.”
