Deck Price Tag: Naya Allies (10th in a 252 Person PTQ)

July 27, 2010 | Posted by Dee

Ro left a comment in the previous Naya Allies post, giving us his list that got 10th place in the second largest PTQ in Texas history (252 players).

I decided to do a price tag on it, because the deck is relatively cheap and I think it is a solid deck. I know at least one top player on Magic League that plays Naya Allies as his main deck. From what I’ve read, it has trouble against Jund but Jund has become less popular. Day of Judgment can be a problem but some UW control players are only playing two copies.

Deck Price Tag: Red/Green Valakut Titan Ramp

July 23, 2010 | Posted by Dee

I’ve been talking about Valakut Titan decks a lot, so I thought I’d do a price tag on the deck.

I picked Tamada Ryouichi’s 1st place list from last weekend’s PTQ in Kanazawa, Japan. The PTQ only had 25 players but don’t be fooled, the deck is pretty good. Many of the top players on Magic League are playing similar lists.

Also, the deck is currently less than $200, which is much lower than most of the other top decks. But I’m sure the price is rising as Primeval Titan is living up to the hype. If you make the changes I recommend below, the deck will be over $200 but still not over $250.

New Deck Pricing Tool

July 21, 2010 | Posted by Dee

I’m happy to announce the launch of a deck pricing tool. The deck price tags have been useful to many MTG players, so I thought it would be good to let you price your own decks. To my knowledge, this is the only deck pricing tool based on eBay prices from Magic Traders. eBay is usually the best place to buy Magic The Gathering cards if you’re looking for low prices.

RG Valakut Titan Ramp

July 20, 2010 | Posted by Dee

I’ve been testing Valakut Titan a lot trying to figure out a solid decklist. I’m still winning at a good rate. My Magic League rating has gone up to 1750 because of the deck.

Sadly, I’ve moved away from the trap version. Trap was just too inconsistent against control. Against control, you really need Valakut so I took out Trap and brought back Expedition Map.

Here’s my current list as well as some commentary on the card choices and the cards I left out.

Turbo Titan: Primeval Titan + Summoning Trap

July 17, 2010 | Posted by Dee

What’s better than four Primeval Titans? How about eight? :)

Ok, so adding Summoning Trap to the Valakut Titan deck doesn’t mean you get four more Titans. But it does allow you to dig through your deck to find them. With Summoning Trap, the deck feels like it has more than four Titans. You will regularly have access to the green mythic rare even if you don’t draw it. Plus, Summoning Trap gives you counterspell protection and instant speed Titan. Playing a Titan during your opponent’s combat phase can be pretty devastating.

Why did I go with this direction for the deck?

RG Valakut Titan Deck Building Process (Plus, An Updated List)

July 14, 2010 | Posted by Dee

Beau was interested in how I morphed my old Valakut deck into the new one so I though I’d go through the deck building process.

I was playing UW Control against a Red/Green Valakut deck a couple days ago and a topdecked Titan killed me out of nowhere, so I revisited Valakut since Titan was just awesome with the volcano. Plus, I felt that Valakut got a boost with Obstinate Baloth to fight Jund and RDW.

I started testing the old list with Titans instead of Siege Gang.

I wanted to keep the removal and Ruinblaster because my meta was Jund and RDW. Searing Blaze seemed better than Burst Lightning so I swapped them. However, further testing has shown that Searing Blaze is too inconsistent, so I went back to Burst.

Winning With Valakut and Primeval Titan

July 12, 2010 | Posted by Dee

Update: Check out my new list.

I think Valakut is viable again in Standard because of M11 cards especially Primeval Titan.

Primeval Titan gives the deck a big creature that also combos perfectly with Valakut. The green titan is similar to Sovereigns of Lost Alara in Mythic Conscription because it can instantly swing the game in your favor.

Also, M11 has Obstinate Baloth to help fight Mono Red Burn, Jund, and Mind Sludge. Cultivate is another great M11 card for the deck.

I’ve been testing the following list and I’ve gotten pretty good results.

Deck Price Tag: Red Deck Wins (1st Place at Japan Nationals)

July 4, 2010 | Posted by Dee

Red is back.

Katsuhiro Mori took a Mono Red Burn Deck (aka Red Deck Wins) to a first place finish in one of the toughest tournaments in the world, the 2010 Japan National Championship. Japan has many of the best players in the world so becoming the Japan National Champion is a pretty big accomplishment.

Mori has one of the most impressive resumes in Magic The Gathering. He’s a former world champion and has two other top eight finishes in the world championships.

Mono Red is great right now because it has good matchups against three of the top decks: Turboland, Mythic Conscription, and Jund.

But the biggest selling point in my opinion is its low cost. Currently, it’s less than $150 on eBay. But if you want to play it, I would buy the cards soon since the prices will probably go up since Mori won with the deck. It’s a great cheap deck to take to FNM.
