Interesting 4 Player Shards/Shards/Shadowmoor Draft

December 19, 2008

Yesterday, I went to my local card shop. Actually, it wasn’t so local. I had to drive for about an hour and a half. It’s not too bad though since I work at home. I don’t have a work commute so I don’t mind occasionally driving a long ways to play live Magic The Gathering. Plus, I was getting tired of Magic Online. I wanted to play real cards against real people.

Sadly, there were only three other people that wanted to draft. I did some searching online and realized where I live (Dallas-Fort Worth area) is not really known for drafting :(

However, if you live around my area, there will be $5 drafts (!) on New Year’s Day at Madness Comics & Games in Denton. Hopefully, that should get more people drafting.

Anyways, back to my tournament report. The four of us decided to draft anyways and then draft the rares afterward with the drafting order based on how well you did. Also, the store only had eight Shards of Alara boosters so we had a Shadowmoor booster as the last pack.

I started off with Resounding Thunder. I got passed Bull Cerodon and then my third pick was Kiss of the Amesha. The player on my right was not playing red and I pretty much got the hookup. My red cards were four Resounding Thunder (!), Puncture Bolt, Power of Fire, Skeletonize, Bull Cerodon, and Cultbrand Cinder.

My preference is to draft five color control. But I realized during the Shadowmoor pack that it would be hard to splash a lot of cards because Shadowmoor didn’t have a lot of mana fixers. So, I stayed within my main colors (red, white, blue) in Shadowmoor. For example, I took Puncture Bolt over Deus of Calamity for my first Shadowmoor pick.

Another interesting pick was the first pick in the second Shards pack. I had a choice between Resounding Thunder and Sharding Sphinx. I took the burn spell because I didn’t know at that time if blue was going to be a main color.

Here’s what I ran.

Five Color Control
Creatures (12)
Spells (10)
Lands (18)
Sideboard (19)

We only had two 20 minute (!) rounds since the store was closing soon.

Match 1

Game 1

He was mana screwed in the beginning. I took a little bit of time but I beat him by killing all his guys and attacking with Cloudheath Drake. Also, I had Power of Fire on Cloudheath Drake and Fatestitcher so I could ping his one and two power guys to death.

Game 2

This went to time as both of our decks were pretty slow and 20 minute rounds are really short.

Match 2

Game 1

He started off with Skill Borrower, Filigree Sages, and Metallurgeon. My draw was pretty bad early in the game. I only played one creature, which he killed with Agony Warp. I stole his tapped Filigree Sages with Biting Tether. He attacked with Skill Borrower and Metallurgeon. This allowed me to kill Metallurgeon with Puncture Bolt.

He played Excommunicate on Filigree Sages. At this point, he started flooding and I knew about it because of Skill Borrower. I Skeletonized Filigree Sages and blocked Skill Borrower with the Skeleton token. I had black mana so I also regenerated the token.

We were at a standstill for a couple of turns with him slowly killing me with Onyx Goblet. However, I drew Kiss of the Amesha, which gave me some breathing room. He played a couple of bombs, Sharding Sphinx and Ghastlord of Fugue. But I had drawn into two Resounding Thunder. I cycled both of them to kill his bombs. Soon, Knight of the Skyward Eye and Bull Cerodon came to play and he quickly died.

Game 2

As you can guess, this went to time like my first game 2.

Drafting the Rares

Sadly, Deus of Calamity was the most expensive rare we drafted. I picked it along with Ghastlord of Fugue and Impromptu Raid.
