Bant Spirit Pod with 4 Drogskol Captain (Top 8 Deck)

Ken Crocker got 7th place at the latest Starcitygames Standard Open in Detroit with a cool Bant Pod deck that featured 4 Drogskol Captain. The deck also had 4 Phantasmal Image and 1 Phyrexian Metamorph.
This main strategy for this deck is assembling an army of Drogskol Captains. With all the clone, or copy, creatures and Birthing Pod, the deck can do this pretty easily.

I think Sam Black was the original creator of the deck. He wrote about it a couple weeks ago on Starcitygames.
Before Avacyn Restored, I don’t think this deck would have been very good. There just wasn’t enough mana fixing to support the mana costs of Strangleroot Geist and Drogskol Captain.
Avacyn Restored gives us Cavern of Souls, a land that can produce all three colors of the deck. You can name Spirit and tap it for green, blue, or white to cast Strangleroot Geist or Drogskol Captain.
With Drogskol Captain and all the clone creatures, this Pod deck definitely has a good plan in the games where you don’t draw Pod. You can simply make a bunch of Drogskol Captains and attack in the air with big hexproof flyers.
Pod just adds a lot to this strategy by turning your creatures into more Drogskol Captains. Strangleroot Geist is definitely a key card because you can sacrifice it to Pod multiple times and search for Drogskol Captain.
Once you get one Captain on the board, you can sac a three-drop like Blade Splicer to find Phyrexian Metamorph or a one-drop mana creature to get Phantasmal Image to copy the Captain.

The clone creatures are so good, sometimes you don’t even need to see a Pod or Captain to win. I played a game where he played Angel of Jubilation. I had 3 Phantasmal Image in hand that I hadn’t cast because there were no good targets.
I cloned his Angel of Jubilation three times. He scooped. I went from just having a Birds of Paradise and Avacyn’s Pilgrim on the board to having three 5/5 flyers, a 3/4 Birds, and a 4/4 Pilgrim. Not bad for only spending six mana.
Sometimes you just clone Dungeon Geists to lock down another creature and just win by attacking for six in the air. Other times you copy Strangleroot Geist and Blade Splicer and go on the beatdown with an army of first strike Golems and undying creatures.
Strangeroot and Dungeon Geists are Spirits so they get the +1/+1 buff and hexproof from Captain.
I like 1 Sigarda, Host of Herons because it is a great blocker versus Restoration Angel and a flipped Delver of Secrets.
Borderland Ranger is a nice one-of Pod target if you need mana fixing or more lands.
The one Naturalize is metagame dependent so you should remove it if you don’t have a lot of artifacts and enchantments in your local metagame.
