Black/White Control Deck with 4 Sorin’s Vengeance

The following deck is one of the most interesting decks I’ve played in a while. I didn’t think you could build a solid deck with 4 Sorin’s Vengeance but AliEnWaRe_ from Magic Online has done just that.
He built a Black/White (BW) Control deck and won booster packs with it in seven Standard Daily Events on Magic Online.
Check out his decklist below.

With 4 Sorin’s Vengeance and 2 Sorin Markov, the game plan for this deck is pretty simple. You want to keep your life total high with defensive cards like Terminus and Black Sun’s Zenith. You ramp up to seven mana with Pristine Talisman and Solemn Simulacrum. Then, you simply unload 2 Sorin’s Vengeance to your opponent and watch him shake his head at your weird deck.
If you only draw one Sorin’s Vengeance, you can still win by playing Sorin Markov and using his -3 ability to bring your opponent down to 10 life.
The deck has a small card advantage engine with Ichor Wellspring, Solemn Simulacrum, Phyrexia’s Core, and Buried Ruin. The card draw from these cards helps you find your kill combo.
Also, 1 Sorin’s Vengeance buys you time against aggro decks since you gain a lot of life. The 10 life you gain might buy you enough time to draw a second Sorin’s Vengeance.
In some games, you can go on the beatdown with Lingering Souls. Once you bring them down to 10 life, any Sorin’s Vengeance is “good game” for you.
The Distress in the sideboard is good against blue decks that will sideboard in counterspells like Negate and Dissipate.
If your opponent brings in a lot of life gain cards, you can sideboard in another Sorin Markov. Also, Karn Liberated gives you another win condition for post-sideboard games.

Here are some descriptions of games I won.
Vs Grixis Control
I went turn three Pristine Talisman into turn four Curse of Death’s Hold. He played Olivia Voldaren. I killed her with Sorin Markov. Then, I activated Sorin’s -3 ability and dealt lethal damage with Sorin’s Vengeance.
He left after game one so we were not able to finish the match.
Vs Blue/Black (UB) Pod
In game one, I beat him down with Spirit tokens from Lingering Souls. He also lost some life from Birthing Pod and Bloodgift Demon to go down to 10 life. He found Consecrated Sphinx with Pod and started drawing a bunch of cards, but I drew a Sorin’s Vengeance for the win. He was so shocked to see that spell.
In game two, I drew 1 Solemn Simulacrum and 2 Pristine Talisman to ramp up to seven mana. Then, I simply cast 2 Sorin’s Vengeance back to back.
Vs Blue/Red (UR) Grand Architect
In game one, I destroyed all his Grand Architects to keep him from ramping up to Wurmcoil Engine. I ramped to seven mana with Pristine Talisman. I hit him with a Sorin’s Vengeance. He reached six mana to play Wurmcoil Engine but before it could attack, I killed him the next turn with a second Sorin’s Vengeance.
Game two was pretty quick. Turn three Pristine Talisman. Turn five Distress to take away his Negate. For turns six and seven, he got hit with Sorin Markov’s -3 ability and a Sorin’s Vengeance. I even had a second Sorin’s Vengeance in hand.
He was attacking me with two Architects but with the life gain from Pristine Talisman, Sorin Markov, and Sorin’s Vengeance, I was never in any real trouble.
Vs Esper Solar Flare
He had Lingering Souls but I killed all his Spirit tokens with Curse of Death’s Hold. Next, he played Sun Titan. I destroyed it with Doom Blade.
He found Oblivion Ring for Curse of Death’s Hold and cast a second Lingering Souls to fill the air with 1/1 flyers. I cast Sorin Markov and Sorin’s Vengeance back to back to bring him to zero life.
He won game two with a Sun Titan and 2 Phantasmal Image. Also, he had a timely Negate and I drew way too many lands.
For game three, he mulled to a hand with five lands and 1 Ponder. He first draw was a land. When he cast Ponder, he saw three more lands on top of his library! He shuffled and of course, he drew a land lol. He showed me his hand and just scooped.
Sometimes you get unlucky in Magic.
One Response to “Black/White Control Deck with 4 Sorin’s Vengeance”

I really like this deck. Last night alone I went 8/2 with it.
And I’m very familar with Sorn’s V in my Mono-Black Drain deck (as a win condition), but it uses Diabolic Tutors to grab it.
