Deck Price Tag: Caw Blade
March 11, 2011
Here is the eBay price tag of the UW Caw Blade deck that has done well in major Standard tournaments since Mirrodin Besieged was released.
Deck Price Tag: Grixis Tezzeret
February 20, 2011
Patrick Chapin got sixth place at Pro Tour Paris with this innovative Grixis Tezzeret deck.
With over 20 artifacts, the deck maximizes each of Tezzeret’s abilities. In my testing, the first ability has yet to miss. Many of the artifacts are cheap so you usually have a target for the second ability. A bunch of 5/5 “haste” artifact creatures is pretty good. And the third ability is lethal late in the game.
Deck Price Tag: BR Vampires for Standard
February 11, 2011
If you like attacking for two, check out Matthew Landstrom’s Black/Red Vampires deck below. He beat over 500 players to win the StarCityGames Standard Open last weekend at Indianapolis.
His list is not too expensive compared to other winning decks. As of today (Feb. 11, 2011), the list is less than $170 and you only need one mythic rare, Demon of Death’s Gate, and one card from Mirrodin Besieged, the uncommon Go for the Throat.
Deck Price Tag: Mono Green Elves for Standard
January 14, 2011
With the addition of a new lord (Ezuri, Renegade Leader), Elves is back as a strong tribe for Standard. Also, Fauna Shaman is an elf and she is one of the most powerful creatures in Standard. She gives the tribe a lot of flexibility. She can fetch lords if you need to boost or protect the team. She can search up silver bullets like Molten-Tail Masticore and Sylvan Ranger. If you have a lot of spare mana, she can get Wolfbriar Elemental.
Llanowar Elves has always been an Elves staple and it is joined by two other strong one-drops (Arbor Elf and Joraga Treespeaker). These cards allow the deck to have explosive starts on a regular basis. Vengevine is good against mass removal and it combos very well with Fauna Shaman.
Here is an Elves decklist that went undefeated in the swiss rounds of last month’s World Championships.
Deck Price Tag: RUG Control Ramp Deck
January 13, 2011
Last year’s Starcitygames Player of the Year, Alex Bertoncini, started off 2011 with a 12th place finish in last weekend’s Starcitygames Standard Open. The tournament was held in Kansas City and had close to 500 players.
Alex played my favorite deck in Standard, RUG Control. I like this deck because it attacks from so many angles. You have cheap red removal to fight aggro. Against control, you have Jace the Mind Sculptor, counterspells, and mana acceleration. Against Primeval Titan decks, you can bring in more counterspells, Acidic Slime, and Volition Reins.
Deck Price Tag: UG Genesis Wave by Conley Woods
January 9, 2011
Conley Woods got second place out of 493 players in this weekend’s Standard Open Tournament by Starcitygames. He played an interesting Blue/Green Genesis Wave deck with 4 Acidic Slime, 4 Spreading Seas, and 7 Titans.
You don’t usually see a full set of Slimes main deck but in a metagame filled with many control and ramp decks, the Slimes provide a lot of value especially since you can cast them on turn three or four with your ramp spells. Conley’s list only has 3 Genesis Wave because you want to spend at least nine mana to cast it. That’s a lot of mana even with all the mana acceleration. But you have Jace the Mindsculptor and Halimar Depths to help you find a Wave once you have a lot of mana.
Deck Price Tag: Pyromancer Ascension With Polymorph Sideboard
September 7, 2010
Pyromancer Ascension is probably the best deck under $100. But one thing I didn’t like about the deck was all the hate that people bring in for post-sideboard games.
The deck does well against most decks in game one, but games two and three can be pretty bad as players side in cards like Celestial Purge, War Priest of Thune, Back to Nature, and Qasali Pridemage.
Tobias Gräfensteiner fixed this problem by switching to a different deck after sideboarding. He brings in a Polymorph package to confuse his opponents and make their hate cards irrelevant.
The Spawning Breath in the sideboard is an especially techy card. It gives you 12 cheap burn spells that can take out Noble Hierarch, Lotus Cobra, and Hellspark Elemental. Plus, it gives you a token for Polymorph.
Tobias used the Polymorph strategy to go 8-2-1 in the Standard portion of this year’s German Nationals. He ended up on the national team with 2nd place finish.
Deck Price Tag: GerryT’s Four Color Dredgevine
September 4, 2010
GerryT is one of my favorite deck builders because he takes winning decklists and makes them even better. His latest creation is a four color Dredgevine deck based on the list that did well in US Nationals.
He added red to include Bloodbraid Elf, Sedraxis Specter, and Cunning Sparkmage. Bloodbraid is great with Dredgevine. Specter gives the deck more cards that use the graveyard and it’s a solid threat on turn three. Cunning Sparkmage is in the sideboard because it’s awesome in many matchups.
Last weekend, he took the decklist below and got 2nd place in a Standard tournament with 240 players.
Deck Price Tag: Mono Green Eldrazi Ramp
August 27, 2010
Mono Green Ramp is not usually a competitive deck but when you’re ramping up to Eldrazi monsters and have access to many useful lands, you gain enough utility to fight the other top decks. Also, Primeval Titan is one of the best ramp creatures ever, All Is Dust is a powerful battlefield sweeper, and Summoning Trap helps you beat counterspells, which traditionally has been a problem for the archetype.
Conrad Kolos took the following decklist to 3rd place finish in the 2010 US Nationals last weekend. Check out his tournament report (part 1 and part 2).
I highly recommend the deck especially for the post Scars of Mirrodin Standard format since it doesn’t lose much from the rotation.
