Deck Price Tag: Bant Mass Polymorph
August 12, 2010
I just found this funky Bant Mass Polymorph deck that went undefeated in a Standard Daily Tournament on Magic Online. It looks like it’s two cards off from Frank Lepore’s list from TCGplayer. Frank also did well with the deck, going 5-1-1 to make the finals in an FNM a couple weeks ago.
As of today, the deck is just over $400.
Deck Price Tag: Jund
August 12, 2010
I’ve written posts about Jund before but I’ve never figured out the price of the deck. So, here’s a deck price tag of one of the best decks in Standard over the past 10 months.
I’m glad Jund was cheaper than many of the other top decks. It allowed players to play a really good deck without having to buy or trade for a bunch of expensive mythic rares.
The list I chose went undefeated in a Daily Tournament yesterday on Magic Online.
Deck Price Tag: Naya Allies (10th in a 252 Person PTQ)
July 27, 2010
Ro left a comment in the previous Naya Allies post, giving us his list that got 10th place in the second largest PTQ in Texas history (252 players).
I decided to do a price tag on it, because the deck is relatively cheap and I think it is a solid deck. I know at least one top player on Magic League that plays Naya Allies as his main deck. From what I’ve read, it has trouble against Jund but Jund has become less popular. Day of Judgment can be a problem but some UW control players are only playing two copies.
Deck Price Tag: Red/Green Valakut Titan Ramp
July 23, 2010
I’ve been talking about Valakut Titan decks a lot, so I thought I’d do a price tag on the deck.
I picked Tamada Ryouichi’s 1st place list from last weekend’s PTQ in Kanazawa, Japan. The PTQ only had 25 players but don’t be fooled, the deck is pretty good. Many of the top players on Magic League are playing similar lists.
Also, the deck is currently less than $200, which is much lower than most of the other top decks. But I’m sure the price is rising as Primeval Titan is living up to the hype. If you make the changes I recommend below, the deck will be over $200 but still not over $250.
Deck Price Tag: Red Deck Wins (1st Place at Japan Nationals)
July 4, 2010
Red is back.
Katsuhiro Mori took a Mono Red Burn Deck (aka Red Deck Wins) to a first place finish in one of the toughest tournaments in the world, the 2010 Japan National Championship. Japan has many of the best players in the world so becoming the Japan National Champion is a pretty big accomplishment.
Mori has one of the most impressive resumes in Magic The Gathering. He’s a former world champion and has two other top eight finishes in the world championships.
Mono Red is great right now because it has good matchups against three of the top decks: Turboland, Mythic Conscription, and Jund.
But the biggest selling point in my opinion is its low cost. Currently, it’s less than $150 on eBay. But if you want to play it, I would buy the cards soon since the prices will probably go up since Mori won with the deck. It’s a great cheap deck to take to FNM.
Deck Price Tag: Dredgevine (Graveyard Deck With Vengevine)
June 29, 2010
Here is a winning rogue deck that’s moderately priced compared to many of the top decks filled with a bunch of expensive mythic rares. Currently, it is less than $300 with close to half of the price tag coming from 4 Vengevines.
Devon O’Donnell took the following Dredgevine decklist to a top four finish at a 5K tournament with 232 players. Like the previous graveyard deck in Standard, Dredgevine is great against slow control decks, solid against midrange decks, and mediocre against fast aggro decks.
Deck Price Tag: RW Kiln Fiend + Emerge Unscathed Deck
June 21, 2010
All my deck price tags so far have been at least $350 so I thought I’d point to a winning deck that costs less than $200 for my budget-minded readers.
This aggro Red/White (Boros) Kiln Fiend deck won a PTQ in the UK posting a 8-1-1 record in the tournament.
The bulk of the price tag is in the 12 fetch lands. If you own some of those lands already, you will save even more money.
Deck Price Tag: Super Friends (UWR Planeswalkers)
June 17, 2010
In William Spaniel’s latest Standard Power Rankings, Blue/White/Red Planeswalkers aka Super Friends is the clear frontrunner with an outstanding 71.6% win percentage. It outranks the second best deck, Mythic, by more than 10 percentage points. Because of Super Friends’ success, I looked for a list to play.
I found Tomoharu Saito’s 10th place list from Grand Prix Manila. I picked his deck because he’s one of the best MTG players in the world. Also, from what I’ve read, he takes playtesting seriously so his decks are probably tuned very well.
His decklist has served me well. I’ve gone 12-4 in matches with it. The 4 Cunning Sparkmage in the sideboard may be surprising but they helped me beat Mythic and Luminarch Ascension from GWB Junk.
Let’s see how much this deck costs.
Deck Price Tag: LSV Turbo Land
June 17, 2010
I’ve already written a quick strategy guide for LSV’s TurboLand deck, so let’s look at the price tag of the deck based on eBay prices.
As of today (June 17, 2010), Oracle of Mul Daya is only $1.03, Avenger of Zendikar is $2.95, and Lotus Cobra is $10.06. I think these cards are great investments to pick up in preparation for the Standard format in October when Shards of Alara block and M10 rotates out. These cards were played in many of the top Block deck lists in the Pro Tour San Juan. The top Block lists are good to examine to see what kind of decks will be played in Standard after a rotation.
There’s a really good chance the prices of these cards will rise so get yours now to save money. Lotus Cobra has an especially big upside. It was a 4-of in many of the Pro Tour San Juan decks. I could see it easily reaching $20-$30.
Here are the other card prices along with the total deck price.
Deck Price Tag: Next Level Bant by Brian Kibler
June 9, 2010
Brian Kibler added to his Magic The Gathering resume with a 1st place finish at Grand Prix Sendai last weekend. The standard tournament had over 900 players and he took home the trophy with an innovative take of the Next Level Bant deck.
The archetype is still pretty new but I think it will gain popularity not only because of Kibler’s win but also because other top players did well with it. 2005 World Champion Katsuhiro Mori and last year’s Player of the Year, Yuuya Watanabe, played similar lists in the tournament. Watanabe got sixth place and Mori got 40th place. All three players were undefeated in day one (first nine rounds).
Let’s look at how much the deck costs.
