Deck Price Tag: RW Kiln Fiend + Emerge Unscathed Deck

June 21, 2010

All my deck price tags so far have been at least $350 so I thought I’d point to a winning deck that costs less than $200 for my budget-minded readers.

This aggro Red/White (Boros) Kiln Fiend deck won a PTQ in the UK posting a 8-1-1 record in the tournament.

The bulk of the price tag is in the 12 fetch lands. If you own some of those lands already, you will save even more money.

I’m actually running an extremely, extremely similar build for those times that I wait until the last minute to brew something up. Mine runs 2 less flats for another mountain and plains, 2 less Teetering Peaks for 2 Smoldering Spires, no burst lightnings or earthquake main in favor of 3 path and an experimental surreal memoir.

    My side:
    1 Path
    2 Pithing Needle
    3 O Ring
    3 Manabarbs
    3 Forked Bolt
    3 Burst Lightning

I am thinking some combo of forked bolt and burst lightning should be Celestial Purge (for the usual targets) and Journey to Nowhere (for polymorphed / summoning trapped Emrakuls)

Quickly browsing some variants with a quick google search for cards to consider:
    - 2 of windborne charge in a 5th place PTQ Amsterdam in St Charles
    - Flame Slash in the board
    - Kor Firewalker in the board
    - 1 of Devastating Summons, may try in the Surreal Memoir slot
    - Basilisk Collar in the board
    - Hell’s Thunder
    - Elspeth

    Hey Beau,

    Thanks for the info.

Every deck you post (that has blue in it) is very “do-able” for anyone minus “Jace, the Mind Sculptor”. $60 per and they all have 4 Jace’s in them? Get real

  5. Dee on June 22nd, 2010 10:08 am

Well, some decks only have 3 Jace, but yeah, I see your point. Jace makes all the top blue decks expensive.

Hi, just wanted to let you know that I took down a PTQ with this deck, with a 7-0-2 record. Won my first 4 rounds against 3 Jund and a U/W control, ID with another U/W and Turboland in r5 and 6, played against Polymorph in quarterfinals, Superfriends in semis and Turboland in finals. Thanks for posting this deck!

  7. Dee on June 27th, 2010 3:37 pm

Kane, congrats on the win! It shows that you don’t need a bunch of mythics to win in Standard today :)

  8. JG on June 28th, 2010 10:57 am

Yeah, Congrats ! I need some help. I’m keen on RDW and currently testing the classical one:
    Creature [19]
4 Ball Lightning, 4 Goblin Guide, 4 Hell’s Thunder, 3 Kargan Dragonlord, 4 Hellspark Elemental.
    Instant [15]
4 Burst Lightning, 4 Lightning Bolt, 4 Searing Blaze,
    3 Staggershock.
    Sorcery [3] 3 Forked Bolt

    Land [23]
    4 Arid Mesa, 14 Mountain, 4 Scalding Tarn,1 Valakut.

    Sideboard: 2 Obsidian Fireheart,4 Siege-Gang Commander,
    3 Earthquake,2 Quenchable Fire, 4 Dragon’s claw.

So, could you please help me abt the sideboard plans? I’m not an expert, so whenever I have tio sb I doubt a lot . My meta implies Jund, UW Ctrl, RUW Planeswalkers, Mythic Bant, and RDW.
Thks a lot once again x yr important advice
    JG

Kane – did you run the exact deck, or did you tweak it some? I’m interested in your thoughts on card choices. Congrats!

  10. JABluemage on June 28th, 2010 3:36 pm

Can someone explain to me the manabarbs in the sideboard?

  11. Dee on June 28th, 2010 8:57 pm

JABluemage, Manabarbs is good against slow control decks and Turboland.

Those decks need a lot of mana to function so Manabarbs is permanent damage source that complements your burn spells and hasty creatures.

Try it out against those decks and you’ll see that it can be pretty powerful. And don’t worry about damaging yourself, because against those decks, you will usually be at a higher life total by the time you play Manabarbs and they take will take the damage before you do. You don’t mind taking damage in that situation. Plus, their spells are more expensive than yours so they will take more damage for each spell cast.

  12. Dee on June 28th, 2010 9:12 pm

JG, I haven’t played RDW in awhile so these plans are probably very rough. Feel free to tweak them if they don’t work out that well.

First, you need Unstable Footing in the sb for Kor Firewalker. I would cut the Firehearts and two Siege-Gang.

    Jund

    -3 Forked Bolt

    +2 Quenchable Fire
    +1 Siege-Gang

    UW Control

    -3 Forked Bolt
    -3 Burst Lightning

    +2 Siege-Gang
    +4 Unstable Footing

    UWR Walkers

    -3 Forked Bolt
    -3 Burst Lightning

    +3 Earthquake
    +3 Unstable Footing

    Mythic

    -3 Staggershock

    +3 Unstable Footing

    RDW

    -3 Forked Bolt
    -1 Guide

    +4 Dragon’s Claw

can you help me with the sb plans for the boros kiln fiend deck that you posted :)

  14. Beau on July 8th, 2010 2:50 pm

After reading Lorddax’s post on the RDW blog section, I am really re-considering the fact that I don’t have the pinger in my board (or come to think of it, main). Which would mean I need Basilisk Collars, which would mean I should grab some Stoneforge Mystics…

  15. Dee on July 11th, 2010 8:21 pm

procastinator, I don’t really have time to give a bunch of sb plans. But I’ll give you some principles. And then try to come up with plans based on the principles and I can give feedback on your plans.

    Here are my principles:

Celestial Purge comes in against red decks, black decks, and Jund.

Path to Exile is good against Baneslayer and other powerful expensive creatures. If they only have a couple of these creatures, then you don’t need to bring in all four Paths.

    Manabarbs for control and Turboland.

Oblivion Ring for decks with a lot of planewalkers like Super Friends (UWR) and Blue/White. Also, you could bring it in against threatening equipment and artifacts like Howling Mine.

Earthquake is great against green decks with a lot of ground creatures with low toughness like Naya and Monument Token decks.

Refraction Trap is good against other red decks. It might also work against removal heavy Jund (4 Bolts, 4 Bit Blasts). Not sure. I haven’t tested it.

For cards to cut, I wouldn’t cut any creatures because they are a permanent source of damage. Burst Lightning and Staggershock are probably your usual cuts. They are the worst spells in my opinion. Cut Emerge Unscathed against decks without a lot of removal like Mythic.

    Hope that helps.

So, based on these principles, what would your sb plans look like?

  16. Dee on July 11th, 2010 8:22 pm

Beau, yeah pingers are pretty cool. You can even use them to take down Baneslayer or Sovereigns with a kicked Burst Lightning.

tell me what you think of this, its kind of a riff on the emerge kiln fiend deck, but with no landfall nonsense and highlights the Spitfire/raid bombardment combo:

    4 Kiln Fiends

    4 Chandra’s Spitfire

    4 Bloodbraid Elves

    3 Goblin Guides

    3 Nest Invaders

    4 Spawning Breath

    4 Brood Birthing

    2 Lightning Bolts

    2 Vines of the Vastwood

    4 Raid Bombardments

    2 Beastmasters Ascension

    4 Rootbound Crags

    3 Arid Mesas

    4 Khalni Gardens

    2 Smoldering Steppes

    5 Mountains

    2 Forests

    2 Raging Ravines

    1 Terramorphic

    1 Tectonic Edge

    2 Goblin Ruinblasters (against manlands)

2 Eldrazi monument (against DOJ decks)

4 Ricochet traps (against counterspells and orings)

3 Leyline of Punishment (against life gain)

    2 Prophetic Prism (spreading seas)

    2 Earthquakes (allies and weenies)

  18. JABluemage on August 24th, 2010 11:59 am

Got something to say?
