Funky Bloodchief Ascension Decklist for Extended (3rd Place at PTQ)

January 11, 2010

Bloodchief AscensionAdrian Sullivan, a premium author at Starcitygames.com, built this really cool Bloodchief Ascension deck that got him 3rd place at a recent PTQ.

Bloodchief Ascension Burn
Spells (28)
Creatures (10)
Lands (22)
Sideboard (15)

Deck Analysis

As the deck name states, this list seeks to break Bloodchief Ascension.

It takes advantage of all the shock lands from Ravnica running around. If your opponent chooses to play them untapped, you can trigger Ascension.

Isochron Scepter + one of the 15 burn spells turns on Ascension pretty easily.

Grove of the Burnwillows + Punishing Fire is a similar combo. Even though they get one life, they still take two damage which triggers Ascension.

Countryside Crusher makes sure you keep drawing spells, which is very important for a burn deck. And Dark Confidant provides a similar benefit as well as helping you dig for Ascension and your other combo pieces.

Simian Spirit Guide lets you play Ascension or Scepter turn one on the play to avoid Spell Snare, Spell Pierce, Duress, and Thoughtseize. Turn one on the draw or turn two on the play, it allows you to avoid Mana Leak.

Talked to Adrian about this list on Sat. at the Midwest Masters – what an amazing guy to chat with. One of the smartest and most eloquent people with whom I’ve had the pleasure of conversion. We should expect an article on the deck on Thursday, his usual day on SCG. I don’t have any info on it other than the fact that he said “i’ll probably be writing about it for next week” when we talked.

Get your copies kids, it wont be cheap after the article.

Cool stuff. Thanks for the update. Adrian does seem like a super smart guy based on his articles.

Got something to say?
