7 Cards that Deal Effectively with Falkenrath Aristocrat

Falkenrath Aristocrat is one of the most annoying creatures in Return to Ravnica Standard because she’s so hard to kill.
Her indestructible ability allows her to win combat battles against most flying blockers. Plus, it allows her to shrug off most of the removal spells in the format.
I can’t remember how many times she wrecked me when I had Supreme Verdict in hand. And now she’s everywhere because Rakdos Aggro won the last two Standard Grand Prixs.
Therefore, you probably need some cards to deal with her if you want to do well in Standard tournaments.
Here are seven cards I recommend to stop the Vampire.
1. Tragic Slip
This is the perfect removal spell for Falkenrath Aristocrat. It’s an instant, which is great against a haste creature so you won’t have to take a hit before killing the creature. Plus, it only costs one black mana.
Your opponent can’t even sacrifice Knight of Infamy to save Falkenrath Aristocrat. The Vampire will get a +1/+1 counter since Knight is a Human but the sacrifice turns on morbid for Tragic Slip. Here’s the ruling.
2. Mark of Mutiny
If you can’t destroy Falkenrath Aristocrat, why not just threaten to steal her and force your opponent to sacrifice her?
By itself, Mark of Mutiny is not that good against other creatures. However, you can play sacrifice outlets like Bloodthrone Vampire and your own Falkenrath Aristocrat to make the card much better.
Stealing Thragtusk and then sacrificing it to Bloodthrone Vampire is pretty sweet since you get the 3/3 Beast token.
3. Silklash Spider
The big Spider with reach is really good against flyers. Also, it has seven toughness so it doesn’t die to burn spells.
I wouldn’t main deck it but it seems like a great sideboard card versus Falkenrath Aristocrat and Thundermaw Hellkite. It has reach instead of flying so it won’t be tapped when Thundermaw Hellkite enters the battlefield.
4. Izzet Staticaster
Your opponent taps out on turn four to cast Falkenrath Aristocrat. You drop Izzet Staticaster and target the Vampire with her ping ability.
Your opponent has to sac a creature to keep Falkenrath Aristocrat alive. Then, on your turn, you target the Vampire again. Your opponent has to sac another creature.
For only three mana, you forced your opponent to sac two creatures to keep Falkenrath Aristocrat alive. That’s pretty good value. And sometimes he won’t have two creatures to sac so Falkenrath Aristocrat will die.
Note you should shoot down Knight of Infamy first with Izzet Staticaster so that your opponent can’t sacrifice him to Falkenrath Aristocrat and get a +1/+1 counter. Izzet Staticaster is ineffective against two toughness creatures.
If your opponent has the Knight on the battlefield, cast Izzet Staticaster while Falkenrath Aristocrat is on the stack. That way you can kill the Knight before the Vampire resolves.
5. Detention Sphere/Oblivion Ring
Falkenrath Aristocrat may be indestructible but that doesn’t stop exile effects. Detention Sphere and Oblivion Ring are solid removal spells because red and black don’t have any ways to deal with enchantments.
The enchantment spells are also good against the recursive ability of Gravecrawler and the undying ability of Geralf’s Messenger.
If you can buy time in the early game and reach six mana, Terminus is the best mass removal spell against Falkenrath Aristocrat and friends.
Cards like Pillar of Flame, Azorius Charm, Centaur Healer, and Thragtusk can slow down your opponent in the early turns until you can clear the board with Terminus.
7. Sever the Bloodline
Sever the Bloodline is pretty good in Jund and Green/White/Black (GWB) or Junk Midrange decks.
These decks are designed to survive aggressive starts so you’ll often be able to reach seven mana to flashback the spell.
