How to Build Abzan Aggro (Fate Reforged Standard)

February 9, 2015 | Posted by Dee

Abzan Aggro
Creatures (22)
Spells (13)
Lands (25)
Sideboard (15)

69% win rate over 42 matches with this deck (results).

And yesterday someone messaged me on reddit saying they won a 50 person PPTQ with a near exact copy of the deck.

Why no Abzan Charm? I tried it out but the other cards proved to be better. RW Aggro is on an upswing and Charm doesn’t hit Rabblemaster and Stormbreath but Downfall does. Also, planeswalkers are making a comeback because of Ugin and Crux of Fate.

Against control and Abzan Midrange, I found Valorous Stance to be better than Charm. Stance protects your guys from removal and it kills Siege Rhino for only less mana than Charm. Also, Stance can hit Courser of Kruphix but Charm can’t.

Why no Sorin? I used to play him but he was mediocre. I think the other cards are better. Sorin is too slow against control and RW Aggro with Hordeling Outburst, Rabblemaster, and Brimaz has become more popular. Sorin is bad against those three token generating cards.

I would rather just play more cheap drops and hit them hard early than durdle around with Sorin. The deck has 12 early drops that can take over the game on their own and they use extra mana well. Also, 12 cheap two-drops is great for giving Anafenza a lot of targets for her +1/+1 counters.

Some people are playing Courser but I don’t like him in this deck. He doesn’t fit the game plan of being aggressive. Two power for four mana is not where you want to be for aggro. I want them dead quickly especially now that FRF gives us Warden, which is a big upgrade over Heir of the Wilds.

Nissa is pretty sweet tech in the sideboard because her 4/4 creature lands can’t be exiled by Ugin and Perilous Vault. Ugin has become a popular finisher in control and ramp decks. You really want a card like Nissa because Ugin gets around the regeneration of Deathdealer and the indestructibity of Fleecemane and Valorous Stance.

Some people are playing Elspeth but she is worse than Nissa. Elspeth costs more and she is much more vulnerable to Ugin. Not only does Nissa cost less, she deals more damage than Elspeth in the first three turns after you play the walker. More damage in less time is where I want to be in an aggro deck.

Possible Changes

+1 Llanowar Wastes
-1 Temple of Malady

10 taplands might be too much for an aggro deck. Actually, you might be able to get away with +2 Llanowar Wastes and -2 Temple of Malady.

+1 Tasigur
-1 Anafenza

This might be a good change because Anafenza is a legendary creature.

Hey I’ve been trying to run abzan aggro and doing better than decent but the deck still feels really midrangy and I don’t like that. I run sorin and agree with you! And my land base is different too. I find myself beating my own hp to get the mana I need via confluence or other lands. But I really like this build and yea I totally agree about the charm…it never comes in handy that much so ima switch it. But did this build change with DofT? I’d really luv to know! Thanks for the help!!!! ????
