Jund Decklist for Worldwake Standard

April 18, 2010 | Posted by Dee

Jamz left a comment and wanted to know what an ideal Jund deck looks like. The best Jund deck for you will depend on your metagame but I’ll share my list so you have a starting point to work with. I’ve been doing well with this list going 11-4 in matches. I mostly play on Magic-League.com where the meta is pretty diverse but there are still some popular decks. The popular decks seem to be Jund, UW Control, and Red Deck Wins.

I haven’t incorporated any Rise of the Eldrazi cards but in my opinion, Jund will not change much because of the new set. There are not really any additions from Rise of the Eldrazi that will make Jund much better whereas the manlands from Worldwake fixed a lot of Jund’s weaknesses. I know some people really like Vengevine and its a good addition but is it really that much better than Garruk or Master of the Wild Hunt?

It takes awhile for players to choose the best cards from a new set, so my Jund list should still be strong for the next few weeks.

Jund
Creatures (19)
Spells (15)
Lands (26)
Sideboard (15)

Creatures

Obviously you want 4 Bloodbraid Elf because that’s your best card. A full set of Putrid Leech is another non-negotiable. Leech is awesome against control and he’s cheap so he can save you a lot of damage by trading with Goblin Guide. Plus, a 4/4 for two mana just beats up rogue decks as William Spaniel’s stats show.

Sprouting Thrinax is one of the best three drops but it could be losing value in Rise of the Eldrazi Standard. In his latest article, Conley Woods brings up a good point that Wall of Omens blocks Thrinax all day. Therefore, you may want to play less than 4 Thrinax. Still, I’m sticking with a full set until Wall of Omens gets popular.

Believe it or not, I used to have 4 Goblin Ruinblaster and 0 Broodmate Dragon instead of 2 Ruinblaster and 2 Broodmate. But the goblin was not very good against rogue decks and Jund could negate his land destruction with mana ramp and Garruk. Plus, Broodmate gave me something to do at six mana while being very good against many decks including Jund.

I kept 2 Ruinblaster because Ruinblaster is great against UW Control and solid versus Jund. He can actually help you race against Red Deck Wins and many decks are playing manlands.

If you don’t have a lot of UW Control or Red Deck Wins in your meta, I could see replacing the 2 Ruinblaster with 1 Broodmate and 1 Siege-Gang or 2 Bituminous Blast.

Currently, I play 2 Broodmate and 2 Siege-Gang. Broodmate is better but it costs one mana more so to keep my curve lower, I went with a couple Siege-Gang. Siege-Gang is one of the weaker creatures in the deck, but he’s the best threat at the five drop spot.

You could try Bituminous Blast in his place but I think the goblin commander is slightly better. Functioning as a win condition, removal, and a direct damage source, he’s more versatile than Blast. He’s an awesome topdeck late in the game when you have a lot of mana. He combos well with Garruk. And he brings a lot of chump blockers, which are great against manlands.

I might switch the 1 Borderland Ranger to a Mountain or Lavaclaw Reaches. Ranger has slowed me down a couple of times where I would’ve rather had a land. But in theory, he’s seems like a solid one-of. He fixes mana, trades in combat with creatures like Bloodbraid Elf and Kor Firewalker, and gives you an extra card to discard to Blightning. I’ll keep testing him to see if a land is better in his spot.

Spells

Lightning Bolt is the best cheap removal spell in your colors so you want a full set. It can hurt planeswalkers, go to the dome, and helps a lot against fast decks, which are often tough matchups. Plus, being a non-black card is great so that White Knight and Devout Lightcaster don’t just dominate you.

The 2 Terminate and 3 Maelstrom Pulse split has been working out well. Terminate is instant speed so it can deal with manlands. Along with the instant speed, it’s one mana cheaper than Pulse, so it’s great against the fast decks. On the other hand, Pulse is very versatile dealing with planeswalkers, Oblivion Ring, Howling Mine, equipment, Baneslayer Angel, and soldier tokens from Martial Coup.

Blightning is one of the best cards in Standard so you want four copies. It gives you card advantage, helps you race, and damages planeswalkers.

Initially, I didn’t have Garruk in the deck but I played against him in a mirror match and he just wrecked me. Garruk is great if you can protect him. He lets you play Broodmate with only four lands. He provides card advantage and he combos well with the creature tokens from Siege-Gang and Thrinax.

I think 2 Garruk is a good number because he’s not that good against Red Deck Wins and Mythic Bant. But if those decks are not in your meta, I would consider going up to three copies. I wouldn’t go up to four though. Having multiples in your hand is not really advantageous since you can’t have 2 Garruk on the battlefield.

Lands

Jund got a huge boost with the Worldwake manlands. Before Worldwake, Jund would lose many games because of mana flood and landkill spells like Ruinblaster and Spreading Seas. You couldn’t really play less lands to fight mana flood because then you were vulnerable to mana screw since you were playing five and six drops. But now you can just play 26-27 land and not be as vulnerable to mana flood and landkill because of the manlands.

Raging Ravine is the four-of because it’s a much better creature than Lavaclaw Reaches. I initially underrated Ravine but it is a beast. 4/4 is huge for a manland and it gets bigger with each attack.

I went with 16 sources in each color. This land configuration allows me to cast a turn two Putrid Leech on a consistent basis while still giving me enough red sources to cast the double red mana cost of Ruinblaster and Siege-Gang.

Sideboard Plans

As I said before, my meta is pretty diverse with Red Deck Wins, UW Control, and Jund being the most popular decks. Therefore, I’ve setup my sideboard and maindeck to fight those three decks while still being competitive against the rest of the field.

Sideboard

1 Goblin Ruinblaster
1 Broodmate Dragon
4 Deathmark
3 Malakir Bloodwitch
4 Dragon’s Claw
1 Rampant Growth
1 Great Sable Stag

Depending on your meta, you might want other cards. Master of the Wild Hunt is great against White Weenie and Mythic Bant. Duress, Mind Rot, and Thought Hemorrhage can be included if you have a lot of control in your meta. Jund Charm is a good foil for Open the Vaults.

I used to run a Jacerator and a couple of fog variants – one of the keys typical to those builds are the howling mines and font of mythos (mythi? mythoses? what’s plural of mythos?). Alot of players think the extra card draw will help, but you should save your pulses for those artifacts – it’s absolutely necessary for the Jacerator player to get them on the board in order to continuously draw answers. Also, don’t overplay your hand (my personal failing, that i’m still trying to learn from) because Jacerator often runs Day of Judgement.

If you can prevent them from drawing answers and don’t overcommit, the cascade effects should be more than enough to beat Jacerator.

i dont know.. i dont feel so confident about this decklist.
ive been playing a lot againtst a mono red goblin deck that only has 2 creatures above 2 manas. im 2-3 against it… any sideboarding suggestions for those tricky fast little goblins with haste?

  6. Dee on May 11th, 2010 7:54 pm

I think Goblins is a bad matchup.

    I would go with

    +4 Dragon’s Claw

    -4 Blightning

If you still have problems, you could try adding a couple Jund Charms in the sideboard and cut the Ruinblaster and then Pulse for them.

I actually added 1 Chandra Nalaar and got rid of 1 Maelstrom Pulse
And I’m trying to fit in the 2 Lilianna Vess.
Also I attempted to add on 2 Vengevine and took off 2 Sprouting Thrinax. It is slightly working

  9. Dee on July 11th, 2010 8:46 pm

Ty, just watch out that your deck doesn’t get too top-heavy. You don’t want to replace too many cheap cards with more expensive ones or your deck will not run as smoothly.

Anyways, thanks for your comment and good luck.

Sry, I haven’t played Jund after the release of Rise of the Eldrazi so I’m not sure how to sideboard or even the way to build the deck. But if I have time, I will do some research and see what other people are doing.

    Hi dee,
I never knew you were pinoy.hehe.i would like to ask if this deck is still competitive in todays standard. I plan to unretire from magic and want to build this particular deck.around how much do you think this will cost. Thanks dee!

  13. Dee on March 22nd, 2011 10:00 am

    Yo del,

    Yep, I am pinoy =]

This deck is actually not legal in Standard. The legal cards today are M11, Scars block, and Zendikar block. Zendikar and M11 will go out in October as the new large set is released. So, if you want a competitive deck for long term, pick a deck where most of the money is in the cards from Scars block.
