MTG Koros Deck for Worldwake Standard
March 11, 2010 | Posted by Dee
Gerry Thompson is on a roll building new winning decks. He broke the Extended format with Thopter Depths and now he has a sweet new list for Standard.
Dubbed “Koros” by the ggslive viewers, his Boros Bushwhacker update with Kor creatures, Stoneforge Mystic, and equipment took him to a top 8 finish at a 5k tournament with over 230 players.
Gerry wrote about the deck and his tournament experience here. Here is the decklist.

Decklist Analysis
The deck has whopping 26 lands, which seems high for an aggro list. I think Gerry likes to play more lands than normal to avoid mana screw. But also, this deck has Adventuring Gear along with the two landfall creatures, Steppe Lynx and Plated Geopede, so you want to hit land drops pretty much every turn.
Plus, Sigil of Distinction and Earthquake are great with a lot of mana and the 2 Tectonic Edge are basically spells.
The 1 Kitesail Apprentice and 2 Kor Duelist are the Kor additions. They can be tutored with Ranger of Eos. They work great with Stoneforge Mystic and the equipment cards, 2 Adventuring Gear, 1 Basilisk Collar, and 1 Sigil of Distinction.
Kor Duelist is especially good with Adventuring Gear and Sigil of Distinction. Duelist + Gear or Sigil = chump block for your opponent. 5/5 double strikers can take out half your opponent’s life and they can kill virtually every creature in Standard.
Kitesail Apprentice is there if you need a flyer to deal the last points of damage. With Gear or Sigil, it can even fight Baneslayer Angel and live.
The full set of Cunning Sparkmage combined with Stoneforge Mystic and Basilisk Collar is a beating against non-Jund green decks. Even if you don’t draw Mystic or Collar, Sparkmage can still be good since it kills one-toughness creatures like Noble Hierarch, Llanowar Elves, and Lotus Cobra. And if you draw multiples, you can take out White Knights and Bloodbraid Elves.
Gerry only has one Goblin Bushwhacker because in his experience, one is usually enough to kill them. This makes sense because your creatures can get pretty big with Gear or Sigil. Also, he says you don’t really want to draw Bushwhacker. You would rather tutor for it with Ranger.
Earthquake is often a one-sided sweeper because you can make your guys big with landfall before playing the red X spell. Plus, sometimes you just cast it like Fireball and kill your opponent with direct damage.

I was wondering if people would start using Kor Duelist now. The inclusion of him breaks this deck imo. Trusty Machete on a vanilla 2/1 was eh at best, but put it on a double striker…now we’re talking. And his comment on Sigil being better than Machete is simply a simple comparison. I’m saying that because some people I know think he’s wrong what with TM always giving you what you pay for but Sigil changes. Sigil does change but the power level is much better for the price you pay.
Adventuring gear has honestly never crossed my mind, an excellent addition.
Nice piece.
Thanks. Yeah, it’s amazing how one card (Stoneforge Mystic) can make other cards more than playable. I saw Adventuring Gear in some Boros sideboards but with Mystic, it’s definitely great in the main.
