Mono Green Rancor Infect Deck (Turn Three Kills!)
June 28, 2012 | Posted by Dee
Yesterday, Steve Guillerm published a Mono Green Infect deck for post Magic 2013 (M13) Standard. The deck included Rancor, which is reprinted in M13 and is one of the best creature enchantments for all time.
With the addition of this enchantment, I had to try out the deck.
So far, I’ve played five matches with sideboard and I’ve won them all. I’m sure I got lucky in some games but the deck felt pretty powerful. I definitely recommend it for FNM.
It’s not too expensive compared to other decks and Rancor really combos well with Infect creatures.
Check out Steve’s decklist below.

I made three changes to the deck because I wanted to try out Cathedral of War. Steve had Forests instead of the new M13 land.
[Preorder Cathedral of War on eBay at a low price]
Cathedral of War was pretty good. Having three or four copies main deck might be better than two. I would test more copies if you’re interested in this deck.
Right now, I only have two copies because it enters the battlefield tapped and I want a lot of Forests to cast a turn one Glistener Elf. Also, in some situations, you want to attack with more than one creature so you won’t be able to use the exalted ability.
Steve originally built a Blue/Green Infect deck before M13 but he felt Mono Green was better with the addition of Rancor.
Blue gives you an unblockable creature (Blighted Agent), a card that makes your creatures unblockable (Artful Dodge), some card draw (Ponder and Gitaxian Probe), and counterspells for the sideboard (Mana Leak and Negate). However, the mana base is much worse.
Rancor gives your creatures trample, which is somewhat of an evasive ability, so you don’t need unblockable effects as much.
As far as playing the deck, I’ve been mulliganing any seven card hand without a creature because you need to pressure your opponent right away. Inkmoth Nexus counts as a creature. I had two games where I killed someone on turn four with just an Inkmoth.

The first game was against Grixis Control. On turn two, I hit him for one poison counter with Inkmoth. Next, I dropped Cathedral to give him two more poison counters. Then, I buffed up the infect manland with Mutagenic Growth and Titanic Growth to deal eight more poison counters for the win.
The second game was against Green/White/Black Tokens. I hit him for one with Inkmoth on turn two. Next, I played Wild Defiance. He tapped out. I killed him on turn four by pumping up Inkmoth Nexus for +8/+8 with Mutagenic Growth and Gut Shot.
Glistener Elf and Rancor can deal a ton of infect damage very quicky. In one of my games, I dealt lethal infect damage to a Naya Aggro player on turn three. I had Glistener Elf on turn one. I enchanted it with Rancor to deal three poison counters on turn two. Then, I dealt seven more poison counters with Titanic Growth on turn three for the win.
Here’s a ruling to keep in mind whenever you have Wild Defiance in play.
Wild Defiance’s ability will resolve before that instant or sorcery spell.
You can Gut Shot one of your own creatures to give it +3/+3 with Wild Defiance. The enchantment’s ability will resolve before Gut Shot so you don’t have to worry about killing your own creature.

Can you write a sideboard plan for this deck, please?
Give me five decks in your local metagame and I’ll try to come up with sideboard plans for them.
5 Decks that are common:
Solar Flare, B/U Control, Human Tokens, U/R Delver and Mono B Zombie Aggro.
Thanks again for SideBoard!
Enjoy!
Solar Flare
+3 Carrion Call
+1 Cathedral of War
-3 Gut Shot
-1 Titanic Growth
B/U Control
+3 Carrion Call
+1 Cathedral of War
-3 Gut Shot
-1 Unnatural Predation
Human Tokens
+3 Ratchet Bomb
-3 Gut Shot
U/R Delver
+4 Mental Misstep
-3 Gut Shot
-1 Unnatural Predation
Mono Black Zombie Aggro
No changes
Thanks a lot Dee. Cheers ^^
A very good article, thanks for sharing!
I am playing UG defiant infect and I am considering inclusion of Rancor, however this mono-green deck caught my attention since I have no dual lands and do not want to invest that much money.
Hence I wonder whether the deck even with 16 creatures is consistent enough in case the opponent has some early creatures for blocking or can control your guys by gutshot for example?
Thanks again
@ sal
Thanks!
I haven’t had problems with a lack of creatures. 16 has been plenty for me.
Plus, you can protect the creatures with Mutagenic Growth (if they have Gut Shot) and Apostle’s Blessing.
If they have blockers, you have pump spells so your creatures win the combat battles. You can also attack past the blockers with Apostle’s Blessing or trample over them with Rancor.
You definitely should play Rancor. Its power level is similar to Wild Defiance.
Good luck!
Ok, sounds good, I will give it a try, thanks for your quick reply
Hey I really like this build. What do you think about adding over run?
Might work, but probably too expensive. The deck only has 21 lands.
This is pretty good. very nice. can i replace inkmoth nexus with something else?
So what if they are running a similar deck? Just run some Melira in there? or just hope you can outgun them
@ Shirt
Not really. Inkmoth is one of the most important cards in the deck.
@ Smsn
Melira seems like a good sideboard card if people in your local metagame are playing similar decks.
What about adding the miracle card that gives +6 /+6 and trample?
and what is the purpose of the Livewire Lash? is it to shoot out some blockers or does it do infect damage when attached?
I don’t like the miracle card because you only have 21 lands. It’s really hard to cast it at six mana so it’s basically a mulligan if it’s in your opening hand.
The card is good in Mono Green Aggro because that deck has a lot more mana (24 lands, 7 mana creatures, 4 Green Sun’s Zenith to find the mana creatures).
When Livewire Lash is attached to an infect creature, the creature gains an ability. It now deals infect damage when it is targeted by a spell.
For example, you equip it on Glistener Elf. Then, you target the Elf with Mutagenic Growth. The ability will trigger so the Elf deals two infect damage to a creature or an opponent.
Here’s the ruling from a level 3 Judge.
oh ok. Thanks for clearing that up. Haha, the miracle one just came into my mind because it’s really possible to get a win in 2 turns!

hi sir how about i don’t have inkmoth nexus? because inkmoth is pretty high price., is there any posibility card that replace the inkmoth nexus?
hey sir what is your side plan in rdw and bant pod?
@ joseph
Unfortunately, there’s not a card that can replace Inkmoth Nexus. It’s one of the most important cards in the deck.
Here are sideboard strategies for RDW and Bant Pod:
RDW
-2 Titanic Growth
+2 Mental Misstep
Bant Pod
+1 Gut Shot
-1 Unnatural Predation
Hi am new to magic and curretly working on a mono green infect deck as well i would like to recommend a card called Invigorate its amazing hope it helps =).
What to sideboard against;
U/W delver
B/W sorins vengeance
B/R zombies
B/U zombies
Infect
Miracles
Naya pod
R/G aggro
Esper
thanks
Please remember that Ponder is banned in Modern. So most people substitute Preordain for Ponder in UG Defiance Infect if they want to play modern.
Past that, I believe that with the reintroduction of Rancor in M13, Mono Green Infect is now a viable option in tournament play.
Also, to increase draw speed (as is the intention of Preordain/Gitaxian Probe) many decks sub in Rot Wolves to equalize this deficiency.
Livewire Lash + Rot Wolf = draw.
Hope this helps.
@ JJ
U/W Delver
+4 Mental Misstep
+3 Pistus Strike
-1 Unnatural Predation
-2 Titanic Growth
-3 Gut Shot
-1 Wild Defiance
B/W Sorin’s Vengeance and Esper Control
+3 Carrion Call
+1 Cathedral of War
-3 Gut Shot
-1 Titanic Growth
Zombies (both B/R and B/U) and Infect
No changes
Miracles
+3 Carrion Call
+1 Cathedral of War
-3 Gut Shot
-1 Unnatural Predation
Naya Pod and R/G Aggro
+1 Gut Shot
-1 Titanic Growth
Great ty alot
What are your thoughts on Ranger’s Guile over Unnatural Predation? With Rancor, I think the hexproof might come in handy more often then the trample.
It depends on the metagame. In a metagame with a lot of removal, Ranger’s Guile is going to be better.
I did 4-0 at my city’s championship (in Brazil) with 15 players saturday.
This deck is amazing. Thank you by sharing this.
Now I believe that next saturday every sideboard will have 2 or more copy of Spellskite. So I’m thinking about add 2 naturalize in my sideboard. Do you have any other idea to deal with this?
Congrats!
Naturalize is a good sideboard card. Viridian Corrupter is good too. I’m not sure which one is better.
RG Ramp or Ramp derivated
@ DeMenor
For Ramp, try this:
Ramp
-3 Gut Shot
-1 Unnatural Predation
+3 Carrion Call
+1 Cathedral of War
