Mox Opal (Scars of Mirrodin Spoiler)
September 5, 2010 | Posted by Dee

It’s that time again. Spoiler season
Scars of Mirrodin is the new set being released on October 1. This set will shake up the Standard environment more than usual. When it becomes legal, Shards of Alara block and Magic 2010 will leave the format so Standard will look very different. No more Bloodbraid Elf and other staples like Noble Hierarch and Path to Exile.
Here is a look at one of the new cards, Mox Opal, an artifact mythic rare.
Mox Opal
Cost: 0
Type: Legendary Artifact
Rules Text: Metalcraft – Tap: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Activate this ability only if you control three or more artifacts.
Flavor Text: The suns of Mirrodin have shone upon perfection only once.
Rarity: Mythic Rare
Metalcraft is a new keyword that gives certain cards abilities if you control three or more artifacts. In Mox Opal’s case, you only need two other artifacts since Mox Opal itself is an artifact.
This artifact provides mana ramp and fixing so you usually want to have your three artifacts for metalcraft early in the game. If you want to play this card, I would keep an eye on new cheap artifacts in the new set. Also, consider existing cheap artifacts like Basilisk Collar and Steel Overseer.
Mox Opal is legendary so you should only play one or two copies.

[...] is intrinsically fantastic. I’m sure we can all think of other ways that we could leverage this card with another highly abused relic for a big first turn advantage. Comments RSS [...]
