Mythic Conscription With 4 Dauntless Escort

May 13, 2010 | Posted by Dee

I think one of the best decks in Standard is Mythic Bant with Sovereigns of Lost Alara, Eldrazi Conscription, and Dauntless Escort. Sovereigns and Conscription gives you a game winning combo at six mana that can’t be chump blocked like Finest Hour and Rafiq of the Many. For six mana, you get a 4/5 creature and give another creature +10/+10 and trample. That’s a really good deal. Plus, Sovereigns can’t be killed by Lightning Bolt like Rafiq.

Some people are still playing Rhox War Monk but Dauntless Escort is much better unless you have a lot of Red aggro decks in your metagame. Dauntless Escort stops Day of Judgment, which is good against the deck and is widely played in the white control decks like UW and UWR. Plus, Escort protects the most important creature on the battlefield. This creature could be the one enchanted with Conscription, Sovereigns, Baneslayer Angel, or Knight Of The Reliquary. Oftentimes protecting a key creature is enough to win the game. For example, it’s hard to lose versus Jund if you keep Baneslayer alive. If you haven’t tried out Escort in the main deck, you should. He single-handedly makes Mythic Bant much better.

This deck is doing well with two PTQ wins already. Here is a list that got 1st place last weekend. That deck is very similar to Matt Sperling’s 1st place deck from two weekends ago. Matt saw a successful list from German Regionals with the Sovereigns + Conscription combo. He added the Escort tech.

Below is Matt’s winning deck.

Mythic Bant (Sovereigns and Conscription)
Creatures (28)
Spells (7)
Lands (25)
Sideboard (15)

Creatures

Mythic Bant starts off with 12 mana accelerators that cost two or less mana. The mana accelerators are so important that I would mulligan any opening hand without a Birds of Paradise, Noble Hierarch, or Lotus Cobra. Your spells are much better when cast a turn earlier. For example, you want to play Jace, the Mind Sculptor on turn three to stop other Jaces. And a turn three or turn four Baneslayer beats many decks. Plus, the deck has a couple expensive spells. Sometimes you need the eight mana to cast Eldrazi Conscription.

There are two 3-drops. I’ve already talked about Dauntless Escort. The other 3-drop is one of the best creatures in Standard, Knight of the Reliquary (KotR). KotR is awesome because she is so versatile.

She provides more acceleration and combos well with Lotus Cobra. It’s not uncommon to cast Sovereigns of Lost Alara on turn four when you have 16 creatures that produce mana. She provides more protection for your creatures by fetching Sejiri Steppe. She can deal with manlands by searching up Tectonic Edge. She can give you more threats by fetching Stirring Wildwood and Celestial Colonnade. Finally, she is usually huge late in the game with all the fetchlands and activations from earlier copies.

Spells

The first version of Mythic came out just after Worldwake was released. It only had creatures, Finest Hour, and 27 land. That version was vulnerable to Day of Judgment and Martial Coup. The planeswalkers (1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant, 3 Jace, the Mind Sculptor, and 1 Gideon Jura) make the deck less vulnerable to mass removal. And with all your acceleration, you can play your copy before your opponent to negate his planeswalkers.

Elspeth is especially good at taking down other planeswalkers. Her second ability (+3/+3 and flying) is great early with your cheap small creatures to take out other planeswalkers. Jace allows you to play less land and his first ability works really well with fetchlands and KotR. Gideon Jura is a beast. He can protect you and your other planeswalkers. He can destroy creatures. And he’s a win condition.

Lands

The mana base has a lot of different lands. First, you want a couple fetchlands to trigger Lotus Cobra and shuffle the library for Jace. Also, the fetchlands make Knight of the Reliquary bigger. Second, you need enough basic lands so that late in the game, the fetchlands can still be useful. Third, you want a couple manlands but not too many because they enter the battlefield tapped and slow down the deck. Fourth, you should add one Sejiri Steppe and one Tectonic Edge as tutor targets for Knight of the Reliquary. Finally, you can play a couple M10 dual lands to fix your mana and reach 25 lands.

Sideboard

Rhox War Monk and Kor Firewalker are great against red decks and solid versus Jund. Qasali Pridemage beats down early, provides exalted to take down 0/4 walls, and most importantly, takes care of problem permanents like Oblivion Ring, Howling Mine, Basilisk Collar, and Vapor Snare. Oblivion Ring is a catch all card that exiles everything except lands. The white enchantment is especially good against planeswalkers. Finally, the five counterspells (4 Negate and 1 Deprive) are great against control decks with few creatures and combo decks like Open the Vaults and Polymorph.

The one card that i’d either add to the board or the main, because of the open the vaults variants (time sieve, esper, etc) is a singleton bojuka bog that you can fetch up with a Knight of the Reliquary as an uncounterable response to Open the Vaults.

Good idea! I’ve seen a couple top eight decks with it in the sideboard.

This deck does have a few god draws that win the game, so if that happens you are boned. However if they dont draw the super V8 gas hand, the key to playing against this deck is to get rid of the mana dorks as soon as possible.

I’m running a verison of Chris Fennell’s 2nd place mono-red w/kiln fiend & devastating summons, and have fared pretty well against this new version of mythic by keeping the dorks off the board. I’ll have notes that I’ll share later about playing against this deck.

lorddax, thanks for the tips. I’ve seen the new red deck and it looks pretty cool with the devastating summons and bushwhacker combo.

If you want, you can send me your notes at http://magicgameplan.com/contact/ and I’ll publish them as a separate post so more people can see them instead of being buried in the comment section.

I think a Linvala, keeper of silence in the sideboard is great against naya and the mirror.

  7. Dee on May 30th, 2010 6:38 pm

Night, Linvala seems very strong against Naya because it shuts down Cunning Sparkmage. Not sure how effective she is in the mirror because she has less targets unless you count the mana creatures. Going after the mana creatures seems subpar since the mana creatures are most effective in early turns before Linvala gets played.

Still, thanks for the tech. Linvala should definitely be in the sideboard if you have Naya in your metagame.

What about Iona naming White or blue for mirror and uwr walkers naming White, jace being easiest to beat out of them all

  9. Dee on June 4th, 2010 3:55 pm

One Iona might work but I think she’s too expensive. Worth trying out though.

Awesome Deck! I want practice for my matchups with it at an upcoming PTQ in NJ. A side question, the mirror plan is to counter their sovereigns? Cause killing their mana rampers seems out of the question? Pls respond soon and make some more deck lists this is GREAT!
    Thanks,
    Albert

I think you have to change the sideboard if you expect mirror matches. I would take out some Rhox and Negates for Path to Exiles or Bant Charms. You want instant speed removal so you can deal with KoTR, Baneslayer, and Sovereigns.

Then bring in your removal and O-Rings and cut Escorts. You can also probably cut a land like Arid Mesa.

Your plan should be to kill the most threatening creature. Don’t go after their mana rampers.

If this is a real bant deck i dont know =/
first a fall you dont need the verdant catacombs for them you can put also 2 forest in the deck it doesnt make any difference
and you dont need 3 jace the mindsculpter …
    1. it’s much to expensive
    2. you don’t play at deckdeath

for the 3 jaces you can put in 1more elspeth and 1more Gideon

and knight of reliquary (or so) you dont need too ….
for them you can put 2 Vengevines in ….
(i know that this is expensiv …)

    sideboard is perfect =)
tectonic edge you dont need … unneseccery …
and i would short the lands at 20-18 … >___>
    4 baneslayer angels out >__>
and 2 rafiq of the manys in <<<
    this is more important
    because if you gott
2 Sovereigns of Lost Alara out and a rafiq is out
you play 2 Eldrazi Conscription on that creature which attacks alone … and you got a (+)20/(+)20 trample , doublestrike
anhilator 4 out you attack with it ,,, you won =)

maybe you keep 2 jaze the mindsculptur in
for the brainstorming … so that you wont draw any eldrazi conscriptions … because that's to expensive mana cost

But for the rest it's a really! really! nice deck idea :D D
    5 rounds = opponents death =)

    i like it =)
