Mythic Fauna Shaman Deck

September 15, 2010 | Posted by Dee

The Scars of Mirrodin rotation for Standard is fast approaching (October 1) so I’ve been blogging about Shards of Alara spoilers. However, I want to talk about one more Standard deck before Shards of Alara block and M10 leave the format.

If you’re looking for a Standard deck for FNM, Magic Online, or one of the remaining big tournaments in September, I highly recommend Mythic Fauna Shaman. This deck has given me the best winning percentage I’ve ever had on Magic-League. I’ve gone 14-3 in rated matches with the deck for a winning percentage of 82%.

I found out about the deck on German Nationals coverage. It was built by Sam Black and Zvi Mowshowitz. You can learn more about it in Sam’s premium article.

The deck is not as fast as the typical Mythic Conscription deck but it is more flexible. Fauna Shaman gives the deck many angles of attack so you gain solid matchups across most of the metagame. At the same time, you can still combo out regularly with Sovereigns of Alara on turn four.

Here is my current version of the deck.

Mythic Fauna Shaman
Creatures (28)
Spells (7)
Lands (25)
Sideboard (15)

As you can see, the list has many of the elements from other Mythic decks. It’s got the 16 mana acceleration creatures, some planeswalkers, and the Conscription package. By adding Fauna Shaman, you can free up cards from the Conscription package and add the following silver bullets.

Vengevine is a good card in attrition wars. Plus, it’s a haste creature if you need to destroy a planeswalker.

Linvala is awesome in the mirror and also hoses other decks like Dredgevine and Naya.

Baneslayer is great against most creature decks.

Primeval Titan is solid against decks with a lot of pinpoint removal and/or Day of Judgment because he can search up manlands. Also, he can help you alpha strike effectively with Sejiri Steppe.

Admonition Angel is rarely played but she has won me many games. She solves many problems – from enchantments like Pyromancer Ascension to artifacts like Howling Mine. She can even exile planeswalkers. Plus, she dominates the battlefield in creature wars if your opponent runs out of removal. She’s great against Soul Sisters and Mythic because those decks don’t have a lot of removal.

Sideboarding is not too hard if you realize that the main decision is whether to play Titans or Sovereigns. You don’t want to play both since one or the other is better depending on the matchup. Also, you don’t want too many six-drops in your deck. Against decks with a lot of removal, you go with Titans. Versus low removal decks, you bring in the Sovereigns. There are two decks where you don’t want either six drop. Against Red Deck Wins and Pyromancer Ascension, I would cut both Titan and Sovereigns and play cheaper creatures.

Practice first before playing the deck because it can be difficult to play Fauna Shaman optimally. In my matches, I’ve searched for every single creature in the deck including Birds of Paradise and Lotus Cobra. It all depends on the board state. The best way to find the right play is by practicing a lot and reviewing your games.

As you get the hang of it, you’ll see that the deck is fun to play. You have so many options once you get Fauna Shaman active and fetching the right creatures will help you win tough games. In post-sideboard games, you tweak your deck even more to gain an advantage.

Here is the breakdown of my matches with the deck:

UW Aggro-Control 1-2
Pyromancer Ascension 2-1
Mythic Fauna with Squadron Hawk 2-1
Mono Green Eldrazi 2-1, 2-0, 1-2
Soul Sisters 2-0
UG Mass Polymorph 2-0
Mono Black Vamps with Marsh Casualties main 1-2
RG Valakut Titan 2-0, 2-0
GW Allies 2-1
Bant Ranger Crabs Mill 2-1
Naya Shaman 2-1
RW Runeflare Trap 2-1
UG Turboland 2-0
Soul Sisters 2-1

Molten-tail Masticore seems good in here.

Yes sir, definitely at least one copy. Maybe even more, but you don’t want the curve to be too high since you’re probably already playing 4 Vengevines. It may be better to have multiple copies of Baneslayer than Masticore even though Baneslayer costs one more mana.
