Building a Sideboard for Previous Level Blue
September 24, 2008
This is Luis Scott-Vargas’ (LSV) third and final video about Previous Level Blue for the new Extended format. Check out videos one and two if you haven’t seen them.
In this Magic The Gathering video, LSV talks about sideboard cards in Previous Level Blue that will effective in the new metagame.
Show Notes
Splashing red and green allows you to play great sideboard cards.
Ancient Grudge, Engineered Explosives, and possibly Firespout are cards to sideboard in against Affinity. After you use these cards, you can finish Affinity off with Vedalken Shackles.
Ancient Grudge is also good against Tron. It takes care of artifacts like Azorius Signet. This is important because Signets allow the Tron player to play around Magus of the Moon.
Threads of Disloyalty are good against cheap, aggro decks. Firespout is probably better than Pyroclasm. It can kill Faeries without hitting your Magus. Still, you may want to run a combination of both. Engineered Explosives is also good against cheap, aggro decks.
Another reason Firespout might be better than Pyroclasm is because it hits a 2/3 Kird Ape.
Tormod’s Crypt and Leyline of the Void are possible sideboard cards if there are a lot of graveyard based decklists in the metagame.
Jace Beleren is good against other control decks include Rock decks packing discard.
Arcbound Ravager is rising in price as people are preparing for the new Extended format.
Previous Level Blue should be a top deck. It was a top deck before and it doesn’t lose much after the rotation. It’s got Magus to disrupt many of the other decks. It plays Tarmogoyf, which one of the best cards in the format.
Previous Level Blue is more consistent than other decks. Its mana base gives it a good chance of playing a turn one Ancestral Visions.
