Should Reflecting Pool Be Banned in Post-Rotation Standard?

September 19, 2008 | Posted by Dee

There’s an interesting discussion on StarCityGames.com’s forums. David Sutcliffe wrote a long piece with 7 reasons why Reflecting Pool should be banned once Shards of Alara is released.

I don’t think Pool should be banned. I think there will still be a good number of post-rotation Standard decks that don’t need the Pool. For example, you’ve got:

  • mono white Kithkin
  • blue/black Faeries
  • mono red Demigod of Revenge
  • black/red tokens with Torrent of Souls
  • black/green Elves

I don’t think it should be banned, either. My first thought (and one of the early responses in the thread) was that if you think the all-color decks are an issue, you want to ban the Vivids, not Pools. Dave said that he didn’t like banning five lands rather than one, but seriously, the Vivids plus the hybrid duals allow the all-color decks — you could do QnT just fine without Pools.

Coincidentally, I was thinking about the new Standard over the last week or so and thinking, “Gosh, I wish there weren’t Vivids in Standard.”

I’m hoping, however, that we have a “Moon”-style effect in Shards. A non-basic-land Armageddon would be hilarious. :) But that’s too much. But some clean way of knocking out nonbasics would be nice. That’s one thing I appreciate in Extended, the tension between the value and vulnerability of nonbasics (I extirpated out a Tron player’s Power Plants in one game last Extended season — also hilarious).

Lol, that’s awesome about Extirpating the Power Plants. I’ve never heard of that before.

Yeah, I saw those forum responses about the Vivid Lands. That would probably be better than banning Pool.

I’m actually hoping for we have a lot of tournament level cards in Shards of Alara. I don’t mind all the 5 color decks. I just want there to be many different playable cards in Standard.
