Spreading Seas Cascade Deck From a Worlds 2009 Standard PTQ

November 22, 2009

Spreading Seas and Convincing Mirage were probably not cards you thought would be in a competitive Standard deck. But most of the decks in Standard don’t play blue and there are many multicolor decks, so these two blue enchantments often act as pseudo Stone Rains for two mana.

Consider how much one Goblin Ruinblaster can wreck a Jund deck and you can see that land destruction is a viable strategy.

In this video, Gerry Thompson talks about his new deck dubbed “Spread ‘Em” that combines the blue enchantments with cascade spells. Cascade works well since Gerry setup the deck to cascade into an enchantment every single time.

With 12 cascade spells and the eight enchantments, one third of his deck messes with his opponent’s lands.

Deck Analysis From the Video

Gerry was 4-1 in a Standard PTQ when the video went up. Based on this tweet, it looks like he lost one more match so he couldn’t make top eight. Both losses were to Vampires, which seems like a tough matchup since they only play one color.

The deck is fairly straightforward. You mess with their mana so they can’t cast a good number of their spells. Ajani Vengeant also fits the land destruction theme by keeping their lands tapped. T

Day of Judgment is a great reset button for the creatures that get through. Bloodbraid + Ardent Plea is a nice clock against your mana screwed opponent. Sphinx of Lost Truths is a finisher that also helps you find more land destruction spells. And Sphinx of Jwar Isle is the other finisher. It’s big, very hard to kill, and has evasion.

Aggro decks like Boros and Red Deck Wins are tough matchups so Gerry has a 15 card sideboard to deal with those decks. He didn’t give exact sideboard plans other than cut the Spreading Seas and Convincing Mirage. Here’s what I would do:

-4 Spreading Seas
-4 Convincing Mirage
-4 Ardent Plea
-3 Day of Judgment

The sideboard plan is interesting. Instead of cascading into land destruction, you cascade into Rhox War Monk and Deft Duelist, which give aggro decks problems.

Hey Dee. Sorry that it’s been such a long time since I’ve been in touch and I just started to look at some of the things on your blog and though I would do a short post about this article you wrote and link to it here.

Thanks a bunch and I will be back linking a bit more often.
