Standard Match: GWu Control Vs. Kithkin

February 28, 2008

Here’s the deck I’ve been testing for the Standard format: Green-White-blue Control. I played against Kithkin today.

Game 1

I won the die roll and elected to play first. My opening hand was:

Snow-Covered Forest
Snow-Covered Plains
Coldsteel Heart
Coalition Relic
Harmonize
Primal Command
Akroma, Angel of Wrath

I lead off with a land. He plays Goldmeadow Stalwart showing Kithkin Zephyrnaut.

I play another land and Coldsteel Heart. He plays Wizened Cenn, which makes his Stalwart a 3/3. He attacks and I go to 17.

I still haven’t drawn a third land, so I play a Coalition Relic. He swings with Cenn and Stalwart. I drop to 12. He plays Kithkin Zephyrnaut, which is also a 3/3. At the end of his turn, I put a counter on the Relic.

At this point, I think I made a mistake. I untap and draw. This is what the board looks like:

Game 1 Vs Kithkin

I have six mana available with my land drop and the Relic counter. I chose to Primal Command. I sent his Mutavault to the top of his library and gained 7 life – bringing me up to 19. However, I think the better play is to Harmonize and then play Into The North for a Mouth of Ronom. It’s a long shot but with Harmonize, I could draw a Wrath of God and a Condemn or a Wrath, Oblivion Ring, and a land.

He played his Mutavault again and placed a counter on Cenn with Rustic Clachan. All his white creatures were now 3/3s. He swung for 9 and went down to 10.

I drew Horizon Canopy. I played it and sacrificed it to draw a card. I drew a land instead of Wrath of God, so I was dead next turn.

Game 2

My sideboard doesn’t really have much against aggro decks.

Sideboard:
2 Cloudthresher
3 Detritivore
2 Riftsweeper
1 Crovax, Ascendant Hero
4 Mwonvuli Acid-moss
3 Eyes Of The Wisent

I sided 2 Riftsweeper for 1 Aeon Chronicler and 1 Crovax, Ascendant Hero.

I chose to play and kept this hand:

Boreal Shelf
Mouth of Ronom
Horizon Canopy
Snow-Covered Plains
Into The North
Coalition Relic
Harmonize

He mulliganed to 3 cards.

He didn’t draw a land for 4 turns. By that time, I had drawn Primal Command. I searched up Akroma, Angel of Wrath. I played her and she went all the way for the win.

Game 3

This time he played first and he didn’t mulligan. I kept this hand:

Brushland
Snow-Covered Forest
Riftsweeper
Harmonize
Primal Command
Aeon Chronicler
Austere Command

It was risky to keep this hand, but I felt I would be okay if I drew some land and he didn’t have a super fast draw. Looking back though, I should’ve mulliganed. I really need Wrath and/or Condemn in the matchup especially with him going first.

He played first turn Goldmeadow Stalwart showing Kinsbaile Borderguard. I drew a great card, Boreal Shelf. I played it.

He reinforced his Stalwart with Rustic Clachan. He sent his 3/3 in the red zone and I went down to 17.

I drew Coalition Relic. I played a land and Riftsweeper.

He played a Mutavault and attacked. I thought for awhile and decided to block with Riftsweeper. I felt like I needed to keep my life total high. Plus, I had Austere Command in the grip. He played Mirror Entity.

I drew another Harmonize and played Coalition Relic.

He attacked with his white creatures. I went down to 13. Then, he played Kithkin Zephyrnaut. I added a counter to Relic at EOT (end of turn).

I drew Treetop Village and this is what the board looked like at the beginning of my precombat main phase:

Game 3 Vs Kithkin

I’ve got one mana coming off of Relic. I’ve got two choices: Harmonize or Aeon Chronicler. I chose to Harmonize but I think Chronicler is the better choice. If he gets a fifth land, I lose to Mirror Entity unless I play a blocker. Also, even with 4 lands, he can attack me down to 1 life with Mirror Entity. I can Austere Command his white creatures but he still has Mutavault for the kill.

With Harmonize, I drew:

Snow-Covered Plains
Cloudthresher
Coldsteel Heart

I played Treetop Village and passed.

He flipped over Militia’s Pride for kinship on the Zephyrnaut, which made it a 4/4. He played Militia’s Pride and attacked with his three white creatures. He paid two white mana so that Militia’s Pride brought two more attacking creatures. I went down to 3 life. I added a counter EOT on Relic.

I drew Wrath of God. I played it and passed the turn. I left myself enough mana to activate Village to block his Mutavault.

On his precombat main phase, this is what the board looked like:

Game 3 Vs Kithkin - Image 2

He played Mosquito Guard and Knight of Meadowgrain. He passed. I added counter on Relic.

I drew Horizon Canopy. I played it. Then, I played Austere Command to destroy his white creatures and his white enchantment.

He attacked with Mutavault and I went to 1 life. He played Mosquito Guard. Again, I added a counter EOT to Relic.

I drew Oblivion Ring. I played Primal Command, fetching Riftsweeper and gaining 7 life. I was thinking of getting Akroma, but I already had Cloudthresher in hand. Plus, I needed a blocker. I played Riftsweeper.

He finally got his fifth land drop, another Mutavault. He activated Mutavault and played Kinsbaile Borderguard, which came into play as a 3/3.

I drew Harmonize. I played Oblivion Ring on his Borderguard.

He played a Plains and then his last card in hand was an Oblivion Ring for my Riftsweeper. He attacked with Mosquito Guard and Mutavault. I blocked Mutavault with Village. I went down to 7 life and his Mutavault died. I think he forgot I had a Village.

I drew another Oblivion Ring. I passed the turn.

He attacked with Mutavault and Oblivion Ring. He flashed a Cloudthresher, which blocked and killed his Mutavault. He played Fortify to deal 2 extra damage to me. Because of combat damage, Cloudthresher damage, and Brushland damage, I was back down to 1 life.

I drew a land and played it. I attacked him down to 8 with Village and Cloudthresher. Then, I played Oblivion Ring on his Mosquito Guard.

He drew a Wizened Cenn and played it.

I drew Akroma, but I didn’t have the mana to play it. I attacked again with Village and Cloudthresher. He blocked the Cloudthresher to stay alive. He still went down to 5 life. I played a Coldsteel Heart to have access to 8 mana.

He played a creature and the next turn I killed him with Akroma.
