5 Reasons to Try Out Magic The Gathering This Fall
September 20, 2008 | Posted by Dee

Magic the Gathering, or Magic for short, has always been a great game to play. But this fall there are even more incentives to learn this awesome collectible card game.
Here are 5 great reasons to try out Magic The Gathering.
1. It will cost less to play.
One of the biggest complaints is how expensive Magic can be. This is a valid criticism because collecting your favorite cards can cost a lot. However, starting early October, Wizards of the Coast (the Magic publisher) will be printing less cards.
This means it will be cheaper to get the cards you want.
When you buy booster packs, you’ll have a greater chance of picking up your favorite cards. The lower amount of cards will lead to a greater supply of each card in the secondary marketplace. A greater supply leads to lower card prices in the singles market.
Also, the greater supply will make it easier to trade for the cards you want.
2. It will be easier to learn.
Another common complaint is how complex Magic can be. The most common tournament format by far is the Standard format. Currently, the Standard format has over 2,100 cards! That’s a lot of cards to keep up with.
The basic rules of Magic are not too complicated. The complexity of Magic comes from the cards. Most of the cards have their own rules text. As you can imagine, keeping up with 2,100 cards is very difficult.
However, since Magic is printing less cards, your learning curve will go down. The new Standard format, which starts October 3, will have less than 1,500 cards. While I think the lower card count will make Magic easier to learn, I don’t think the game will be less fun. 1,500 cards still gives players a lot to explore without being intimidating.
3. There will be a lot of new players.
No matter how and where you learn to play Magic The Gathering, you’ll probably meet new players just like you. This makes it more fun and less intimidating to learn the game because you’ll have others in the same boat.
There will be a lot of new players because Wizards of the Coast has done many things to attract new players.
They have encouraged their existing players to recruit new people. They have given more resources to local comic book stores and even grassroots playgroups meeting at public places like libraries and bookstores. This brings me to my next reason.
4. You may not have to drive far to find other players.
With more resources going to the local organizers, there will be more places to play.
For example, prereleases are tournaments where you can play with the new card set one week before it’s official release date. These tournaments are very popular. They attract all types of Magic players – from new players to pro players.
In the last couple of years, prereleases could not be run by small local stores. Only the premier tournament organizers could run them. So, you often had to drive many miles to get to one. However, the next prerelease on September 27 and 28, will be run by both the small local stores and the premier tournament organizers.
With more places to play, you can pick the closest one and save on gas. With gas prices going through the roof, this is a great benefit.
5. The new set looks awesome.
Shards of Alara, the new set, will be released on October 3. The feedback for the preview cards have been very positive. Also, Shards of Alara is a gold themed, or multicolor, set. Historically, multicolor sets have been the most popular sets.
Try it out!
