Blue/Black Infect Deck (Top Four Out of 123 Players)
March 21, 2011 | Posted by Dee
Update Nov 9, 2011: This deck is no longer Standard legal but here is an Infect deck that is legal. It got 3rd place in a Standard tournament with 360 players.
Two weekends ago, Brian Kibler made top four in a qualifier tournament in Colton, California. The tournament had over 120 players.
Kibler played a sweet infect deck featuring Phyrexian Crusader, Phyrexian Vatmother, and Contagion Clasp.
Check out his decklist below.

I didn’t think a poison deck could be viable in major Standard tournaments but it looks like Kibler has proven me wrong. I think the key is the effectiveness of Phyrexian Crusader in the current metagame. For example, Valakut, Caw Blade, Boros, and Vampires make up a big chunk of the metagame and Phyrexian Crusader matches up well against those decks.
Versus Valakut, it dodges Lightning Bolt, Pyroclasm, and Slagstorm while providing a quick clock. Versus Caw Blade, it is unblockable. Versus Boros, it has protection from the whole deck. Versus Vampires, it dodges most of the removal and wins most of the creature battles.

Inkmoth Nexus is another important card in the deck. It doesn’t cost a spell slot and it has evasion, which makes it easier to give your opponent poison counters. Also, it has a nice combo with Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas late in the game. Once you have at least six lands, Tezzeret can make it a 5/5 so you can surprise your opponent with five poison counters from an evasion creature in one turn.

Tumble Magnet is a card that has been picking up in popularity because it is a great foil against equipment. It fits this deck well because it gives you more artifacts for Tezzeret.

What do you think about adding some Halimar depth?
I´m seeing that you plan to take out Tezzeret “almost always on G2″. Do you think it can work with one Tezzeret? what can you use if you only have one?
Halimar Depths doesn’t seem strong enough. It slows down the deck. Not only does it enter the battlefield tapped, but you need basic lands for Drowned Catacomb. But test it out and see.
You can play the deck with one Tezzeret. Try Skithyrix in its place.
I am kind of new to the game so this might seem like a stupid question but what is the contagion clasp used for and is there a reason you didn’t run throne of geth?
Also how does creeping tar pit help in your infect deck? Or is that just for the mana?
This isn’t my deck, but my guess is that the deck builder, Brian Kibler, like Clasp over Throne of Geth because Clasp can kill or shrink creatures. For example, Lotus Cobra, Steppe Lynx, and Plated Geopede are great targets.
Creeping Tar Pit is for the mana and to fight planewalkers especially Jace. On rare occasions you win with regular damage. Remember Tezzeret can make 5/5 non-infect dudes.
Awesome, thanks for explaining.
One last question since I’v been trying to build an infect deck for a while now, do you think that preordain would be more useful than distortion strike?
I dunno. I’ve never played with distortion strike. My guess is that Preordain is better but test it out. Play a 2/2 split and play a couple of games and see which one is better.
There is a cheaper version wich had reached good results: http://www.thecouncil.es/tcdecks/deck.php?id=5834&iddeck=42266
Could you help us to do some sideboard plans?
