Blue/Green Infect Wins a World Magic Cup Qualifier

June 3, 2012 | Posted by Dee

It always great to see under-the-radar rogue decks do well at high level Standard tournaments. Blue/Green (UG) Infect won a World Magic Cup Qualifier last week in France (tournament results page in French).

I tested the deck. It’s pretty powerful and super fun to play. Check out the decklist below as well as a video I created about the deck.

UG Infect
Creatures (7)
Spells (31)
Lands (22)
Sideboard (15)

This video shows the power of the deck. I go over five games that I won. I think the video gives you a feel for how to play the deck.

Game 1 (fast forward to 0:33 on the video)

I had a sweet turn four kill against Red/White Humans.

Sometimes you just get lucky and draw three Mutagenic Growths to buff up your infect creatures. Apostle’s Blessing also did some work to make Glistener Elf unblockable while Ponder made sure I drew both instants two turns earlier.

Game 2 (3:14 on the video)

This game against Esper Control shows how good Wild Defiance is with infect creatures. Artful Dodge is especially good with the green enchantment because it gives you two +3/+3 triggered abilities and it makes your guys unblockable.

On turn five, I attacked with a 10/10 unblockable Glistener Elf. He tried to destroy it with Go for the Throat but I had Ranger’s Guile to protect the poisonous Elf.

Game 3 (7:45 on the video)

This was another game against Esper Control.

Turn one Glistener Elf, turn two Blighted Agent, and turn three Inkmoth Nexus and Wild Defiance is pretty good. I only had Artful Dodge to go with Wild Defiance but it was enough.

Game 4 (12:06 on the video)

Another turn four kill, this time against Blue/Green Ramp. Wild Defiance and Artful Dodge showed up again.

Game 5 (14:13 on the video)

I played against Blue/Green Ramp again. He was on the play and had a turn four Frost Titan. He tried to tap down Blighted Agent but I protected it with Apostle’s Blessing.

Then, I hit him for four poison counters with Wild Defiance and Artful Dodge. He attacked with Frost Titan to tap down Blighted Agent.

I killed him on the next turn with a 9/9 Inkmoth Nexus. I buffed it with Mutagenic Growth and made it unblockable by flashing back Artful Dodge since he had Birds of Paradise to chump block. The creature land also got +6/+6 from Wild Defiance.

I made an almost identical deck shortly after Avacyn Restored’s release. I used livewire lash however and I feel that it is pretty much amazing to have in an infect deck.

Oops, I messed up copying the deck. The deck actually has 1 Livewire Lash.

Here are the things I missed, which I updated in the decklist:

    -2 Artful Dodge
    +1 Livewire Lash
    +1 Runechanter’s Pike

I run the same kind of deck but instead of 2 gut shot, 4 ponder, and 1 runechanters pike; I run 4 revenge of the hunted and 3 wolfir silverheart. I also run a play set of mutagenic growth. I’ve had several tournament game wins on turn 2. Turn 1 glistener elf, turn 2 miracle revenge of the hunted and 2 mutagintics.
