Zombie Pod Finishes in the Top Eight of a $5,000 Tournament

Last weekend, Gerard Fabiano made top eight in a TCGPlayer $5K Standard tournament with a deck that combined Zombies and Birthing Pod.

Geralf’s Messenger is the best card in Zombies decks. It’s pretty easy to win a game whenever you draw two Messengers.

When you add Birthing Pod, you have a higher chance of getting Geralf’s Messenger on the battlefield. You can sacrifice your two-drops to search for it.

Also, you can sac it to find Phyrexian Metamorph and then copy it to put another Messenger on the board. This play is really powerful.

If you’re familiar with Zombie decks, you won’t be surprised at most of the creatures.

Gravecrawler and Diregraf Ghoul are staple one-drops while Fume Spitter makes an appearance to kill turn one Delver of Secrets and mana dorks like Birds of Paradise.

Blood Artist is in some Zombie decks. It’s pretty good in this deck because you have Birthing Pod to sac creatures. Also, Pod finds Phyrexian Metamorph if you want to copy Blood Artist. In some situations, having multiple Blood Artists on the battlefield is the best way to win.

Gloom Surgeon is starting to see more play. I tested the deck for a couple of matches and this card was solid. I like that it can brawl with Spirit tokens, Snapcaster Mage, and Strangleroot Geist without dying.

With Birthing Pod in the deck, you can play toolbox cards like Manic Vandal and Zealous Conscripts. Falkenrath Aristocrat is your only four-drop in the Pod chain so you will need it to Pod for Zealous Conscripts (unless you copy a four-drop with Metamorph).

In the sideboard, Bonfire of the Damned is a nice card against Timely Reinforcements and Lingering Souls. Also, Phyrexian Obliterator is good against those white cards. It’s pretty cool that you can Pod for the 5/5 trampler by sacrificing a Messenger.
